If you jump in and out of something you tend to miss the good bits though
Average out a few years back at a time usually four years at least to see if there’s a margin there. By the time stores look cheap and feed looks cheap the boat has sailed
Totally agree, It's not for me jumping in and out , sell every week, buy most weeks, I know 3 or 4 cattle men who won't be seen around a store ring now till barley drops.

All my costings are done at what it could be sold for approximately, however you always get people who don't do costings properly, I have a friend who takes cattle into Thirsk (about 25 mile round trip) for no cost as he does it himself.
You also get the farms who will now go out or nearly out of cattle as barley is to dear to feed and find it easier to sell, then when barley goes below £150 you find them back in the store rings buying cattle again.
Then you get others who just keep going with similar numbers all year round regardless of feed costs at £120 or £200. It does make you splutter a bit though at £200/tonne !!!!
It’s like Clive with his cover crops!

Usually whatever the "experts" say the opposite happens!!!! One of Strutt and Parkers "experts" once told me and dad "you can't make a living fattening cattle inside" he suggested we buy stirks in spring and keep them outside on grass then sell them in autumn thus having no winter feed costs!!!!!!
Yes summering cattle buy dear and sell cheap then wonder why bigger beast haven’t made a shilling

Clearly the Strutt and Parker expert was never warned not to marry a summer graziers daughter!
