Cattle tagging regulation change?

I realise that we are all going to have to use eid tags in the future, I have started this year in fact.

Talking to someone who should know today and her advice was that there will be a new sort of eid tag coming out, new herd numbers and all cattle must have a new eid tag with reference to the old number on it too.

Is this true does anyone know?

If it is, well why? Unnecessary rule changing in spades.

As far as I've heard they are doing away with cts and replacing it with a newer system as currently it's struggling to keep up.

1 Eid tags for cattle are going to be introduced early next year.

2 After about 18 months all cattle on farms that have none eid tags will have to be tagged with eid tags ( thou the same number they have now will be used )

3 Herd number will stay the same

4 passports will be stopped and then it will all be done in real time using eid readers/ smartphones and that will include ALL med records for each and every animal on a national database

5 Sheep will also follow cattle and all med records for every animal will have to be done in real time on the national database which will be made avlaiable to people like retailers.

..........

NFU and in particular Minette Batters are behind/ pushing the above thru, she claims that the vast majority of NFU members want/ support the above changes and eid tagging for cattle, only problem is the vast majority of NFU members have no idea that eid tagging/ the national real time database for med records has even been thought of let alone about to be introduced.

I don't remember being asked if I wanted this change. Perhaps @Guy Smith would care to comment?

They have very small select groups of farmers that they know will support anything they want to introduce who they ask about things like this.

RT do the same.

Every NFU member I have asked if they support Eid tagging etc for cattle have all replied they didn't even know about it and when you tell them that the NFU say that they as a member support/want it they reply : Well it would be nice of them to actually tell us about it/ ask us in the first place!

When I ordered my next run of tags recently they said something was going to happen. But they didn't know what, I thought I would order eid tags but they said don't because the new ones where expected to be different to the ones they produce now.

I was told only order enough for use this year, because in 2020 not only EID but all numerical tags come in.
U.K. to be replaced by numbers. After a period (unspecified but 2-4 years was mentioned) all cattle must have these tags in.

If you are a member I’m amazed you haven’t come across the Livestock Information Programme. It’s been doing the rounds on the website, in BFG, in the updates, at branch and regional meetings for months now.
Hmm. Maybe an actual letter asking for opinions might have been more appropriate? Not everyone goes to regional NFU meetings or has the website as their homepage.

Let’s be honest, those meetings would be telling and not asking. Decisions been made without much grass roots input.

We bow down to the advances of technology......... what could ever go wrong?

Do you lot really think the NFU just decided to roll out a new system and told DEFRA to do it?

CTS is on its knees, it's seriously old tech and pretty much useless. The NFU have been involved in consultation and have put forward members views, mine was one of them, but they can only inform the membership of what government have decided, not dictate to the lawmakers.

Maybe we should abandon technology altogether, hand milking and delivery by horse anyone? That three legged stool looks a bit fancy, you should have stuck with an old stump to sit on...

EID was initially used extensively for tracking parcels in America

While the tags still have a failure rate of around 5%, it's still more accurate than sticky label barcodes falling off.

Following the Anderson report on foot and mouth, the glorious Westminster civil service then decided to gold plate regulation and introduced Eid with 100% accuracy or penalise the farmer, despite the bloody technology not existing for that level of accuracy:banghead:

Of course, cattle Eid will go perfectly smoothly.

Plus we have the confidence that every government software system always works from the moment it's needed.....

Letters are a rather expensive way to communicate with members on individual issues. Hopefully you get BFG

"CTS is on its knees, it's seriously old tech and pretty much useless."

Really???
In my experience, BCMS / CTS's delivery, communications and accuracy has been a shining light in the farce that is gov.uk's dalliances with new technology.
