Cattle won’t graze.

Anyone got any advice for beef cattle that won’t graze? I put them in a paddock with lovely lush grass and all they do is turn around and stand at the gate looking to come out. Really frustrating. Any thoughts welcome.

Changing feed sometimes takes time. I don't know about cattle but I use carrots to train horses. Foals won't touch them at first. I sprinkle grated carrot on soaked sugar beet pulp to get them going. It's like kids and beer!

Scatter chopped grass over their usual feed?

Is there any yellowing on the grass , I had a problem last year , bad Rust infection , cattle would not touch it
funny you mention that....we had a batch of 2nd cut silage bales last year which the beasts really didn't fancy.
It was well made- drier than some people would like-, a thick leafy sward, if a couple of weeks over the top...I wonder if that was the problem.

Mind, when the cold wet May left us short....sucklers cleaned it up then.

What species of grass is this lush stuff?
We made some Hay off an old ley that had sterile brome in and it looked green and lush after mowing but nothing ate it or the Hay we made from it!!

Crown Rust is now recognised as one of the most serious leaf
diseases of grass capable of devastating pastures. Once the
disease takes a hold there can be a noticeable reduction in tillering
and root growth and the foliage will turn yellow. Palatability can
be badly affected with stock refusing to eat a heavily infected
pasture. The re-growth and response to nitrogen can also be hit
by crown rust. Once confined to the south and west, the disease
seems to be steadily moving northwards; possibly as a result of
global warming.
