Yes, a new set of transfer pump vanes and the cylinder they rotate in seem to have cured the problem. It's starting better now, less cranking required. I put that down to better transfer pressure but I'm no diesel expert. Not sure if the cylinder needed replacing but they come as a kit with a seal. I think you can just buy the vanes, they're made of a carbon composite I believe.

This is my future course of action if I get no smoke symptoms: Prime with lift pump.
Good battery or two to ensure fast cranking. Top bleed valve removed. At least a good 15 secs crank. No fuel flying out of bleed port? Then you haven't got transfer pressure. If she needs really fast cranking to start I would put in new vanes in the transfer pump.
I'd do the usual checks for air in the system but wouldn't get too hung up about it because I used to see air in the line from the lift pump when I primed and the engine
would still start but took much longer to start than it does now.
