Agrovista’s drone services highlighted at Cereals 2017

Some of the most significant advances in agronomy available to UK farmers will be on display at Agrovista’s stand at Cereals 2017, where visitors will be able to quiz experts on how these novel technologies can benefit their businesses.

Among these is a recently launched commercial drone service, developed by Plantsystems, Agrovista’s precision services arm.

This service offers flight packages carried out by the company’s fully-approved unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) operators, or a processing service for farmers who have their own drones.

“The development of drone technology is providing real potential for using relatively simple hobby tools for more complex agronomy tasks,” says Lewis McKerrow, Agrovista’s head of precision technology.

Research by the company has shown that higher-specification hobby drones costing around £1200-1800 fitted with a good-quality standard visual camera can do most of the tasks carried out by professional drones costing several times as much.

“Good hobby drones are fine for identifying most parameters of field performance,” says Mr McKerrow. “You need something with a reasonable flight time of 15 minutes or more, even when it’s a bit windy.

“The drone should also carry a camera that can provide 3.5cm resolution at 120m flying height, allowing you to create maps showing establishment, biomass, weeds and disease and to carry out plant counts.”

Agrovista uses its MapIT Pro software to process data captured by the drone from several passes during the season to create field maps. These can be used for variable rate drilling and nitrogen application, and even patch spraying weeds with high resolution accuracy.

Flight and data processing charges vary according to location and job size, typically costing £3-4/ha. Drone operators who only require the data processing service will pay around 50p/ha per zone map and £1/ha for a zone and rate map.

Agrovista experts will be on hand during Cereals to explain more about the service and to advise visitors on which drone would be best for their situation.

* Visitors will be able to see a range of other key agronomy developments on the Agrovista’s stand, including the PotatoSize App developed by the James Hutton Institute and Agrovista.

This tool uses cutting-edge automated analysis of pictures of tuber samples from test digs taken by growers on their tablet or smartphone, replacing laborious riddling and grading of tubers through multiple sieves.

The app provides accurate results within minutes, enabling growers to manage burn down/haulm destruction strategies to optimise tuber size, ensuring crops meet market requirements and so maximise profits.

The latest version of Agrovista’s cloud-based technical information exchange system Axis will be on show. This allows agronomy and precision-farming data to be uploaded and shared in real time with advisers, agronomists, operators and contractors, providing true flexibility and efficiency to a farming business.

In addition, visitors can also update on Agrovista’s extensive range of trials assessing the value of cover crops and companion crops in arable rotations, including their role in boosting crop and soil heath and controlling herbicide-resistant grassweeds.

Catros compact disc harrow range extended yet again

Catros Special
The introduction of the smaller 2.5, 3.0 and 4.0 metre rigid Catros Special compact disc harrows helps provide this type of specialist cultivation tool at a price which is affordable to the smaller grower. Thus it gives them the benefits of the uniform contour following for shallow, even depth control, the high-quality, oil-immersed life-long disc bearings with slide seals and the optimum rear consolidation roller for maximum weed seed/volunteer/soil contact. The Catros Special is available in either a 460 mm smooth disc option for shallow stubble chitting work or as the Catros+ Special with a 510 mm serrated disc for areas of heavier organic matter levels such as for grassland renovation or after cover crops or maize stubbles.

Catros+ x003-2T
Completing the range at the upper end is the all-new Catros+ 7003/8003/9003-2TX trailed harrows in 7.0, 8.0 and 9.0 metre working widths respectively and which then fill in the gap between the Catros 6002-2 and the monster 12.0 m Catros+ 12003-2TS. The TX designation signifies centralised running gear which provides the balance for comfortable high-speed road transport and a short overall length for maximum manoeuvrability. A choice of braking systems, either via air or hydraulic, makes the machine exceptionally safe on the road. Once in the field the machine folds out easily and the rear consolidation roller, of which there is a choice of 9 different options depending on soil type and application, provides the depth control in work. Working depth of the discs is controlled hydraulically from the tractor seat and an optional Crushboard can be fitted either ahead of or behind the cultivation element depending again on application. The Catros+ x003-2TX comes as standard with the 510mm serrated discs.

Cereals ses the launch of the new Cataya conventional drill combination

The trend latterly when it comes to drill combinations has been very much in favour of pneumatic metering systems. Larger hopper capacities and the introduction of electrically-driven metering systems with push-button calibration and automatic GPS-based headland shut-off systems have been the main driving factors.

However, the simplicity of a conventional seed drill with its lack of fan and improved rearward visibility still holds some appeal to many end-users.

The new 3 metre working width Cataya conventional drill combination goes a long way to bridging the gap between the two systems with its new 1270 litre seed hopper that sports an extremely favourable centre of gravity to keep the tractor lift capacity requirement at a minimum. Filling is quick and easy with the wide hopper opening and a lid profile that is designed to prevent spills.

Precis metering system
The new peg wheel metering system is easy to switch between fine seeds and cereals at just the quick push of a slide. The seed shaft is driven electrically to give infinite variation of the seed rate from the tractor seat and push button calibration. The seed shaft can be specified to drive singly or in two halves and thus offers either full width automatic GPS-based headland shut-off or half-side, 1.5 metre ‘boom sections’ on the headland depending on the degree of accuracy desired.

SmartCenter convenience
The seed set-up, calibration and seed emptying functions are all controlled from a centralised operator station found to the left hand side of the drill in easy reach of the tractor cab. The electric metering system can be operated through the ISOBUS terminal in the cab or via the optional TwinTerminal 3.0 down on the drill. The TwinTerminal means that all the drill set-up can be done at ground level negating the need to trot backwards and forwards in and out of the cab during calibration. The flick over to calibration and the positioning of the trays is all handy from this one side. The ISOBUS machine ECU comes as standard with TaskController TC-BAS, TC-GEO and TC-SC for full documentation transfer and Section Control as well as supporting all AUX-N functions for tractor joystick operation. The drill can be controlled either by one of the AMAZONE ISOBUS terminals or via a third-party controller.

Universal setting tool
The theme of centralised control is taken beyond the SmartCenter and duplicated across all of the machine settings as well. The universal setting tool, which is hung on the drill, can be used to set seed placement depth, levelling board height, power harrow side plates, markers, following harrow, etc.; all of which can be done without the need for multiple spanners, now that’s convenient.

New soil-tillage models up front
The Cataya seed drills are mounted onto the redesigned Series 1 power harrows and rotary cultivators which feature new easy-adjust side plates, parallelogram guided depth control for the tine depth and a roller mounted levelling board. A new range of wheel track eradicator tines are also now available. Seed placement accuracy is aided by the choice of packer roller behind the power harrow with the existing 580 mm wedge ring roller and 600mm steel packer rollers being joined by new 500 or 600 mm trapezium profile rollers as well as the 600 mm Matrix tyre profile wedge ring roller already seen on the Catros compact disc harrows.

TwinTeC double disc coulters
The seed is placed into the area of consolidated soil created by the roller choice by either the well-known RoTeC Control coulters or the all-new TwinTeC double disc coulter. The new TwinTeC coulter features a pair of 340mm diameter Boron steel discs running at an angle of 10° which creates the perfect furrow for the seed to be fed down into via the interchangeable seed guidance system with moveable guide extension. This guidance system ensures that the seed is embedded into the bottom of the furrow without any influence from the rotating discs. Seed coverage and depth control is then provided by the depth guidance roller behind; this roller is available in 50 or 65 mm widths depending on soil type. The coulter pressure can be infinitely-variably adjusted up to 60 kg/coulter and the Cataya is available in row spacings of either 12.5cm or 15cm depending on choice.

KNIGHT LAUNCHES NEW ‘ENTRY LEVEL’ MODELS

Knight Farm Machinery’s new Xplorer range offers potential customers a good specification entry level trailer sprayer, designed and equipped with the medium scale arable farmer in mind.

The machines will be available with either 3,000 or 4,000 litre spray tanks, with 12 to 28 metre self-levelling hydraulic booms.

Spray tanks are made of moulded polyethelene and equipped with a remote drain, a 300 or 400 litre clean water rinse tank complete with a rota flush tank rinse nozzle, and a 40 litre chemical induction hopper fitted with Arag ergonomic control valves.

The Knight Series “3” self-levelling booms feature full electro-hydraulic control of boom height, fold and tilt, which ensures it maintains accurate height and spray applications.

The booms are fitted with 19mm stainless steel spray lines and served with an auto-recirculation prime and purge system. Triplet or Quin nozzle bodies are supplied together with a set of fan nozzles. The machine is powered by a 300 litres/minute Bertolini six cylinder diaphragm pump.

Control is via an Arag Delta 80 control terminal with a 21cm colour screen. This enables the operator to work with a range of systems.

That includes an automatic application rate controller; a 3G communication system; EGNOS and RTK receivers; DGPS guidance and Seletron auto individual nozzle control. It also facilitates joystick control of boom movement functions and spray control.

The machine has a self-levelling suspension and proven anti-yaw suspension. It is also fitted with a heavy duty axle (fitted with 340/85 R48 wheels) with combined leaf spring and air suspension, and an AXLE-Trak auto steering axle system with a slope/tilt sensor.

Eco-M Chassis Developments

Dale Drills Eco-M has seen significant interest since it’s launch at Cereals 2015. The mid-sized offering from Dale Drills is available in sizes from 3 – 6m and utilises a more orthodox layout than their larger machines. The M series mounts the companies Eco drilling assemblies to a trailed chassis in three rows. Land wheels are positioned between the 1st and second row whilst the seed hopper is mounted towards the front of the drill to ensure an even distribution of weight.
 
MCCONNEL UNVEILS INNOVATIVE NEW POWER ARM SERIES

McConnel will officially launch its new 75 Series Power Arms at Cereals 2017.

De Sangosse to promote the benefits of R&D at Cereals – Stand 404

Fans of innovative technology should visit the De Sangosse stand at Cereals. Not only will visitors be able to learn more about the benefits research and technology has brought to crop production, but also see a genuine Formula 1 car up close.

“Agriculture and Formula 1 have more in common than might appear. Both are heavily reliant on research investment to develop innovative solutions that improve performance. By displaying Jarno Trulli’s Jordan F1 car from 2001, we are seeking to promote our own products of investment,” says Simon McMunn, De Sangosse commercial manager.

Products such as Pod-Stik, TDS slug pellets, Radiate seed treatment and X-change water conditioner were all innovations developed by De Sangosse through its investment in research, says Simon McMunn.

“Extensive trials indicate that by using Pod-Stik growers can cut pod-shatter losses. It can be co-applied at desiccation or as a stand-alone application making it an easy and worthwhile investment,” says Simon McMunn.

Much has been made of varieties claiming pod-shatter resistance as a means to reducing crop losses, but Mr McMunn says independent trials indicate that they still benefit from an application of Pod-Stik.

“Across 14 independent trials, varieties branded as ‘shatter resistant’, yielded more with Pod-Stik,” he says.

Water conditioners and seed treatments are also beneficial to efforts to protect plant health and performance.

“The performance of plant protection products can be improved with the addition of X-change which neutralises the effects of cations in hard water while seed treated with Radiate produces more roots through auxin stimulation. Both are the reward of focussed investment and extensive trials.”

Visitors will also be able to discover De Sangosse’s range of class-leading metaldehyde and ferric phosphate molluscicides.

New grain dryer control system simplifies harvest management

A new control system designed to provide reliable drying of grain and other combinable crops with minimal manual intervention will feature at the Cereals Event for the first time.

Introduced by Kentra Grain Systems (Stand 1012), one of the UK’s leading crop dryer manufacturers, the Dryer Master DM510 control unit and software can be retrofitted to most continuous flow crop dryers or embedded into the control panel of a new Kentra dryer.

Both installations use a pair of moisture sensors – one at the intake, one at the discharge point – to calculate and automatically adjust how long grain needs to spend passing through the dryer to achieve the target moisture level set by the operator.

Barry Higginbottom, Kentra managing director, says: “This proven technology from Canada can save valuable time otherwise spent monitoring and managing a dryer manually and can bring about significant savings in terms of energy use and unnecessary weight loss resulting from over-drying.”

The Dryer Master system comprises a highly accurate moisture sensor installed in the conveyor line taking grain from the dryer and an inlet sensor usually fitted at the top of a continuous flow dryer that detects changes in the moisture content of incoming grain. The control software uses the readings from these sensors to calculate the residence time needed to hit an average target moisture and adjust the discharge rate accordingly.

“The ability to predict when, say, wetter incoming grain will fill the dryer takes all the guesswork out of managing the system and results in more accurate and consistent drying,” says Mr Higginbottom.

“With manual monitoring and control, you’re always working behind the curve, altering settings after the event – when the combine opens up in damper crop around a field boundary, for example, or as crops lose moisture after a dewy morning,” he adds. “With intake moisture sensing and predictive software, grain drying becomes more accurate and consistent.”

Both sensors automatically compensate for grain temperature to ensure accurate readings and calibrating the post-drying sensor involves nothing more than pressing a ‘calibrate’ button on the control panel, putting a couple of samples through a moisture meter and entering the readings.

“We don’t advocate a ‘set and forget’ approach; it’s good practice to have someone supervising the drying operation and we recommend repeating the sensor calibration two or three times a day as a check,” says Barry Higginbottom. “But the accuracy of this automated control system will give the store supervisor confidence to attend to other aspects of harvest management without neglecting the dryer.”

Significant cost saving is the other potential attraction of the system, he adds: “Manual grain dryer management involves responding to samples taken after the grain has been dried and to avoid being caught out there is a tendency to err on the side of caution, which often results in a lot of grain being dried beyond the optimum.”

That is costly in energy – bearing in mind it takes more energy to move grain from 14% to 13% mc than from 15-14% – and also in weight loss.

“Assuming a grain price of £100/tonne, a farm drying 20,000 tonnes of grain has only to save 1% moisture in over-drying to regain £20,000 in lost revenue,” Mr Higginbottom points out. “A farm drying 4-5000 tonnes of grain a year would recoup the £10,000-£12,000 all-in purchase of a Dryer Master system in three years – a bigger operator even sooner – while also saving time and hassle at harvest.”

The Dryer Master display provides a quick view of drying status and settings, a manual option for operators who prefer to make their own discharge rate decisions, a number of alarm alerts and a print-out for records. Where Internet access is available, the display is duplicated on a web browser accessible on a farm office computer or remotely via a smart phone or other mobile device.
 
NEW PUMP, NOZZLE AND PRECISION AG PRODUCTS FROM PENTAIR HYPRO

Pentair Hypro will show their new range of 9310 Series Centrifugal Pumps with ForceField Technology at Cereals 2017 on stand 126. These hydraulically driven centrifugal pumps are simple in design, with higher capacity, lighter weight and more compact dimensions than similar capacity diaphragm pumps.

The new Forcefield seals now provide the ultimate in dry run protection as a fail-safe for automatic systems, preventing costly downtime by protecting the mechanical seal for the shaft that drives the centrifugal pump’s spinning impeller against failure due to running dry or chemical bonding failures.

Also on a working nozzle display will be the 3D nozzle which has been tuned to eliminate the smallest driftable droplets as well as larger droplets that do not give effective target coverage. It also inclines the spray to effectively cover both front and back of the target. The result is improved spray coverage and proven increases in weed control of up to 6% as well as a reduction of spray drift helping to gain more spray days when they are really needed.

A working demonstration of the ProStop-E nozzle valve will also be on display. This electrically-actuated nozzle valve allows individual nozzle control for precise matching of spray swaths and can virtually eliminate spray overlaps. Reductions of 2.5% in sprayed area and therefore the overall chemical and liquid fertiliser bill have been recorded in initial farm-scale trials.

Tools for future proofing farm profitability to be launched at Cereals

According to John Pelham, Anderson’s business consultant, the ability of farm businesses to identify and address loss making areas is key to improving resilience against future threats, such as Brexit.

He believes that every grower should know where yield occurs, where the costs are and the financial consequences of management decisions. For arable producers, this could be taking an under -performing crop out of the rotation or removing low yielding parts of fields, such as outer headlands, from cropping plans, but it might also mean investing more in higher potential areas.

“However, being able to measure field performance and understand unit costs are critical; if you can’t measure something, you can’t manage it,” he says.

Visitors to the Hutchinsons stand at this year’s Cereals Event will have the opportunity to see how the company’s Omnia Precision software enables this approach, with the launch of two innovative new features, yield performance mapping and cost of production mapping.

Yield Performance mapping

Hutchinsons Omnia Precision system allows growers and agronomists to analyse multiple layers of field data – including yield maps – to pin down under performing areas and inform management decisions.

“Generating yield maps is no more than an exercise in data collection; when actually it’s how this data is interpreted in conjunction with all the other factors that can affect yield that’s valuable, and the consistency of that yield over seasons,” explains services leader, Matt Ward.

With the Omnia yield performance mapping capability, it’s possible for growers and agronomists to identify and map areas of fields by categorising them in terms of the consistency of performance such as poorly consistent yield, good consistent yield and so on.”

“In this way, management decisions can be made based on this sub-field information. It may be that a higher yielding area of the field has shown up to be potentially inconsistent, so it may not be worth pushing this area whereas if another area delivers an average yield and is potentially consistent, it could be worth investing in this.

Being able to link this yield performance data with cost of production is key to profitability, so we have introduced a second feature that can do just this, he says.

Cost of production mapping

Using Omnia, growers are able to create average cost of production information by crop, market outlet, variety or by field using known or predicted costs, with known or predicted yields.

“Where growers have variable inputs or yield map data, it makes sense that they want to manage costs and their crops on a more site-specific basis.”

However, the variation in output across a field and the increasing use of variable input applications means that some elements of cost of production may be misleading when done on a field scale, says Mr Ward.

“Using the Omnia cost of production mapping, it is possible to generate a quick and easy snapshot of individual site performance based on standard industry costs, but for those that have more detailed cost information this can be easily adopted to show much more precise information, bespoke to the individual farming business.”

Used in combination, these Omnia features provide growers and agronomists with a unique and powerful way of addressing variability across the farm business, and eliminating loss making areas, that impact overall farm profitability.

New mintill and direct drill coulter points from Dutch Openers added to Spaldings tillage tools range

A new range of seed drill coulter assemblies for mintill and direct drilling – including a conversion kit for Horsch CO drills – is being introduced to the extensive tillage tools range supplied by direct sales specialist Spaldings at the Cereals Event.

The Universal series coulter range from Canadian manufacturer Dutch Openers offers a choice of easily fitted low-draft points for single- and double-row seeding, band sowing and liquid or solid fertiliser placement.

They can be installed on a number of tine drill makes and models used in the UK and Ireland, with replacement bodies or frogs making it easy to convert to the new points.

“The Universal coulter assemblies from Dutch Openers have earned a good reputation for low draft, wear resistance and consistent seed placement,” says Nigel Whelan, Spaldings marketing director. “We’re stocking a range of popular models which can be purchased through our sales team or directly off our website, with more specialist designs also available to order.”

Dutch Openers is a division of Saskatchewan-based engineering firm Dutch Industries, specialising in coulters for mintill and direct drilling. The Universal series is the most versatile design; the other five ranges produced by the company are for specific North American seed drills or meet the particular requirements of more challenging soils and sowing conditions.

“Whether you prefer single-row, double-row or band sowing with or without fertiliser, the points in the Universal series all fit the same body,” explains Nigel Whelan. “And because they are held in place by just a single roll pin, they are quick and easy to exchange or replace.”

Common features include wear-resistant tungsten facing, a prominent leading point for good soil penetration, and a shallow wing angle for low draft. The back of the rear-delivery points is designed to resist plugging up in wet soils.

Available from stock at prices from £42.30 to £92.70 each are a 25mm (1in) single-row point; 50mm (2in) and 127mm (5in) band sowing points; and double-row points in 64mm (2.5in), 89mm (3.5in) and 127mm (5in) sizes.

When the liquid or solid fertiliser delivery tubes are attached to the back of the double-row points, fertiliser is placed between and 9.5mm (3/8in) below the seed rows where it is readily available but with sufficient segregation to avoid scorch.

A leg conversion for Horsch CO and Sprinter tine drills enables any of the Dutch Universal coulter points to be fitted to these ploughed land or min-till tine drills for direct drilling into stubbles.

At last, there is a way to defeat every farmers’ enemy – blackgrass with the new low-disturbance toolbar from Yorkshire-based Grange Machinery. This subsoiling equipment has the versatility to enhance existing machines with a deeper working element to cultivators and drills.

The toolbar can be used in conjunction with a trailed machine or as a standalone agricultural implement to loosen headlands or tramlines before fieldwork.

“Getting on top of black-grass has driven our decision to launch our low-disturbance toolbar” stated Richard Beadle, farmer of 500 acres in Yorkshire and co-director of Grange Machinery.

Machines come in widths of 3m, 4m or 6m with six, eight or twelve legs. The discs cut in front to minimise surface disturbance and leg centre spacings can range from 0.5m to 0.6m, with the outer set sliding into the frame for transport. This system works especially well to improve black grass control.

“Our shallow working subsoil equipment gives current cultivation and drilling systems more versatility and flexibility in different crop establishment processes in the varying soil types and ground conditions that farmers face. Our soil loosening toolbars improve the soil structure and lower the cost of establishment, resulting in both healthier margins and increased profit for your business.” Commented Rhun Jones, director of Grange Machinery

Working depth can be adjusted hydraulically and the legs are tripped with either shearbolt or auto-reset protection. Hydraulic power is supplied to the back of the toolbar and as the machine is designed primarily for use with trailed implements, there’s a choice of rear hitches and linkage options available to pull a range of implements.
