Cereals 2019

A lot of people have worked really hard for this event and deserve our thanks, probably more than ever in the conditions they have endured. However I do think its future could be in doubt, it seems to have lost its "I must go appeal" , I am only a 30 min drive away and cereal farming is in my blood, but I just could not motivate myself to attend, I cant really explain why but it doesn't appeal any more. I will happily attend my local agricultural show next week and give it my full support, maybe I am getting old and miserable who knows!!!

Its the internet. Anything you need to know you can find out in seconds on a phone. So days of product launches etc aren't quite what they were. If somebody has something they want to sell to you then they will make sure your eyes see it asap online.

The other thing is farming corn isn't actually that innovative. And I think the years of Haymarket taking the p iss out of everyone naturally took its toll. It seems to be trying to be both an outdoor and indoor show at the same time - which is a fine line to tread. I wouldn't go 5 hours drive to a summer show to listen to people talking in a tent - I'd rather listen to that on a podcast in the tractor - Iits just a way more efficient way of hearing things.

I'm not kicking the show, I've not been for 8 years. I'm just giving a point of view by the way. Things are always evolving.

I cannot imagine how Haymarket would have coped with the conditions at this year’s show.
Well done Comexposium. You proved yourselves big time this year.

I went yesterday and had a very good day. I did feel sorry for both the organizers and the exhibitors who had all put so much effort in to get stalls and stands up in extremely “challenging” conditions in the run up. But people seemed to be putting a brave face on it all and making the best of it. Well done one and all for keeping the wheels on the wagon under very trying circumstances.

Just got this really nice note and wanted to share as I think summed up how hard the exhibitors and our visitors worked to have an event this week...

Just got home from a really good day thank you, I’m sure your nerves are shot and ready for a strong drink but what you and your team have pulled off this week was amazing I only came today and actually had a really good day saw who I wanted and felt a positive vibe about the whole event. Yes I know some companies weren’t going in the first place and there is something for you all to try and work on and a few sadly pulled out or couldn’t get set up on Tuesday but it was really good vibe and reminded me of the Ploughing match in Ireland which I was lucky enough to attend 4 or 5 times where there is this amazing cando attitude throughout for example if somebodies stand flooded and they did frequently in Ireland in October they were moved that evening and everybody helped etc etc.

We are not big arable growers but it's still a useful day for me for CPD (FACTS) and catching up with old ADAS colleagues, family and others that I know. Had some useful conversations on policy issues and free food all day :) , looked at some wheat varieties, picked up some publications and did some hedge farming.

Not a reflection of the show, but the highlight for me.... hearing my first corn bunting singing in one of the barley fields, whilst walking from car to show ground and also on the reverse journey. (y)

Being largely deaf the birdsong passes me by, but with a big interest in bees, I couldn't help but notice a huge number of bumblebees in the many strips of phacelia all around the show site, despite the awful weather!

The buzz for me comes in finding farm machinery and methods which I've never seen before. There was plenty in the Farmers Weekly Superfarmers talks and discussion. Valuable stuff.

Cereals breakdown finishes up today - Hester said there was additional rain but no real concerns.
We will be forwarding additional info by email to attendees this week including a data pack of the Cereals presentations with speaker permission, videos from the event and an attendee survey. Thank you again for all those that came out despite the weather, made a muddy field into something that I am still amazed about this morning.
