You could have seen a picture of the 800E and not notice that looks near enough exactly the same as an 875C just with a little blue filler cap

No variable transmission as Challenger think its better to use power shift.
They should know as they a d CAT previously have built a lot of tracked tractors.

But the challenger box is well proven and reliable, and probably more efficient at transfering power. I do like the vario transmission, but I would rather have the challenger with its proven gearbox, driveline, undercarriage etc than a competitors cvt machine which is yet unproven imo. I think people will still buy the challenger because it is a good solid machine, and although the transmission is a little clunky, most people would rather have the reliability and resale value that comes with the challengers.

CAT have been working on a cvt gearbox since the 90's for use in their wheel loaders and have put the latest version in its 966K xe loader. They put 320 hp through it with a C9.3 Acert engine so I think they would shoehorn that into its tracked tractors as use the fendt vario. Time will tell

Deere's must be doing something right with the IVT in the 8RT as most are sold with it
and we have not sold a power shift 8rt from a BB depot yet.

IVT might be popular here but why are Deere producing the new e23 powershift box then?

A close spaced powershift box is more efficient than a power sapping IVT transmission with many more moving parts IMHO.

Actually, a CVT gearbox has around 20 percent less moving parts than a powershift gearbox does.

Western Europe will demand a CVT transmission for most applications but for North America, Australia and Eastern Europe/Russia a powershift is sufficient. The European market is still increasing though?

To be honest with you i dont think anyone disagrees that a cvt in the new challenger would be a good thing to have its more a case of whether the hydrostatic mechanical power split drive in the vario transmission can be as efficient as a powershift and whether it can deal with the amount of power that tracks put directly to the ground which in some cases they cannot at the moment. However like you say im sure people like caterpillar or more likely fendt with agco are more than capable of developing for tracked ag use.

Tommy,
CAT don't make tractors anymore! They produce the gearbox and running gear for challenger.......
If that is the case then CAT would be keen to put their cvt box in front of the top men at Challenger in order to recoup the r and d money spent over more units than wheel loaders alone???
