What do you guys think? Am I getting enough extra tractor by making this switch? Probably cost me 8-10k.
Would love a really mint late model - is there anything out there?

Never paid ant attention to the weight of the two tractors and there wouldn't been a lot of difference in traction between the two but the 3120 was much better on the pto and was a much livelyer engine due to the Stanadine fuel pump that was fitted. Our 6290 was fitted with the close centered hyd pump so suppose that might have run away with a few HP as it pumped more oil.
Links Lass what fuel pump was fitted to the 6190,just ever saw one up this way and was a much bigger tractor than the 6290 as it was based on the bigger range which I cant remember the range numbers of.

Biggest differences are the cab, and the clutchless shuttle on the 6290

I had a 51 reg 6290 from new, replaced a terrible 6170 and saved Massey here, brilliant tractor.

Can't fault my 3120 - just thought 6290 would have more pulling power but if not then I might hold unto the old girl and save my money!
Still have a 6290 in use. Both models are 2 of MF's best imo, suppose even the last 6290 is 15 years old now so it'll depend on what you can find as a lot of em now are getting towards the end of their working life. Having said that the 6290 is is an improvement over the 3120 .

I think if we change our thinking on kit we could be pleasantly surprised. I reckon we need to get more like the quarry men who will service on time and recondition a machine and take another working life out of it. Maybe these ultra new tractors not but definitely in the age bracket of the 6290 it is more than possible.

Generally, the bigger machine, the longer the potential lifespan, and the more worthwhile a rebuild is. Hence why more quarry shovels get rebuilt than loadalls.
A smaller machine is cheaper to replace than a big one, but its rebuild cost not less by as much.

Don't know if it's still the same but CAT used to recommend a 'tear down time for some of their stuff which was a strip and rebuild. Probably not now as things last a lot longer with modern machining.
Closest to this of any agricultural stuff I know was the old Zetor crystal which was pistons and liners at 5000 hrs service and were supplied in a box at purchase. Not many made it to the buyers though as were 'forgotten about' by dealers.
