Pilot very nearly joined the RAF at 16 but one eye wasnt perfect so could do the fast jets only the slow stuff like transport, do 15 years then join BA and fly the world accompanied by trolley dollies, what's not to like, mind half the trolley dollies are blokes these days
I’ve a mate who went down the pilot route, predominately to meet the stewardesses, the reality is that he’s in a little fisheries protection plane with 3 other sweaty blokes 🤣

Was seriously interested in joining the navy to serve on submarines back years ago- too much Tom Clancy books in my youth.

Now I would just like to be the terminator to go back in time and kill people I don't like.
Next door farmers son decided to have a career change from feed rep at the age of 30.
After a rapid and illustrious career he had 3 years commanding HMS Vengance (nuclear submarine) with his “finger on the button” and an OBE - Proud Father !!!
Later went on the navy training department.
He persuaded his younger brother to take up deep sea diving (oil industry) whist his older brother made a name for himself in the Ag machinery trade and is now a branch manager for Scruton’s.

I’ve been reading this thread and thinking about what I would like to do instead of farm and I honestly can’t come up with an answer . Not sure if that’s a good thing or not . 🤔

That makes sense if you think about it. Most other careers involve being told what to do by someone at some stage, even if you're self employed you still have customers to work with.
If you own your own farm, you can really please yourself what you do with it, including selling up if you get fed up. I'm not saying its not hard work especially if its you buying the place, but its work of your choosing if you see what I mean.
What's better than that?

I wouldn't want to be tied to a full time job.
I'm thinking quality control inspector on a West coast distillery some of the year, and possibly judging the ladies beach volley ball on a tropical island for the winter months.
They're tiresome jobs, but someone has to do them.

Back in the days when there was such a thing - metalwork teacher

Still a thing in further education (post 16). I actually do a bit of fabricating, welding, machining and bench work although another member of staff does most of it as I can do other workshop units, driving and operating etc etc. Pure engineering colleges as opposed to ag eng do a lot of metal work

I set my heart on being a palaeontologist but my dad's eldest brother died and l said l would work on the family farm for a year or so until things got sorted. Anyway l ended up staying on at the farm for the rest of my working life.

One regret I have is not going for a commission in the navy, I am sure I would have loved it, maybe even not come back to farming. Been running a racing rowing boat company for the last 18 years alongside the arable farm. Now selling it and have contractors doing the arable work. Who knows what’s next, a couple of years sorting out the infrastructure for business let’s and to make life easier then we’ll see....
Must admit I quite fancied the merchant navy for a while when I was younger , my dad had a friend who was chief engineer he had some good stories .
