Changing a roller on a Claas 255

We were baling a heavy patch of silage today when the bottom roller shredded itself along the length of the fluting. It will need a new roller, but apart from the expense (£600 for just the roller), has anyone done one, and is there anything to look out for? It's the rearmost one at the bottom so looks fairly accessible. Is it worth looking at Krampe parts, as a quick Google makes it look as if they might do one Thanks in anticipation! :)

We broke the shaft on that same roller last year, still have to see if they will repair it or make a new one. A genuine new Claas one is definitely pricier over here than the price you quoted.

Thanks for the advice, one and all. I ordered up a roller from Balerparts (Woodfields), which should be here tomorrow. Next job is removing the Gib key. It looks as if the roller stopped dead while the chain end kept driving.

You'll need a wedge to drive behind the gin head key to fetch it out, we've made them in the past out of a old tractor link arm (hard steel) just cut it to a wedge shape and drive it between the head of the key and sprocket

Key will nearly fall out if you do like MF -Andy says, need a length of 21/2 inch tube; long enough for an assistant to hold tight to sprocket hub, and big enough to allow the key head to pass inside it. Give the end a smart wallop with a sledge hammer.

there isn't allways room to knock them on tho?

Wet afternoon here so I had an attack on the roller and cut off the remains so I could take the shaft into the workshop. sure enough, after wacking a length of pipe over the end, they key came out with minimal help from a taper. A bit of heat helped as well. So now the whole thing is in pieces and ready to reassemble tomorrow.
Thanks for all the comments! :)
