Channel 4 Sheep shearing cruelty item tonight.

On tonight's Channel 4 news there was an item on animal cruelty by contract sheep shearers. The video was supplied by PETA Asia so had a particular background but it made for uncomfortable viewing and more bad publicity.

It showed shearers kicking, punching, stomping on heads and hitting sheep with the handpiece.

Surely no farmer would knowingly allow their sheep to be treated this way?

Somebody evidently thinks it's ok and employed them without supervising. Some people think tradespeople with all the kit guarantees quality of work.

I didn't know there was already a thread - I've started one too. Should I delete it?

Did they not release a similar (probably the same) vid last year?

yeah watched with incredulity - i dont know a farmer that doesnt check in at shearing time - or leave someone to keep a wary eye if its a new team - some of it were proper shocking (some clearly the filmers never held a squirming sheep) it would be interesting to know how many crews they managed to get on to only find those cases.

It gave everyone a bad name. Those of us that bother to have public liability insurance and invest in our training every year are consistently overlooked by some customers wanting cheap and fast, regardless of cost. And those racing to the bottom on price don't help the situation.

Doesn't anyone remember the shocking picture that the PETARDS put up last year of the 'shorn' lamb. It turned out to be a photoshop job and they were totally unrepentant. You can't believe anything those scum print, video or say. They will lie through their teeth, use violence and intimidation and any other underhand, illegal means to impose their will on others. No court will ever touch them. To a man, woman and child they are reprehensible scum.
There was a video doing the rounds from Oz in 2016, the offenders were charged and fined, I think they are recycling a done and dusted story as they are short of news, sympathy and funds at the moment.
I've watched, Brit's, Kiwis, Aussies and never seen anything untowards in 12 years rolling fleece for shearers. You can't loose the rag, sheep are harder than men and an injury costs you money and your teams reputation.

Who knows? Media and photo shopping can portray any story, I know my local market got targeted by peta and showed a convincing video of animals being struck by a stick and bawling in pain continuously. I know the drovers, 40 years experience, worked in Banbury, decent genuine guys, the sale was a suckled calf sale they were shouting, but right editing can portray a nudge with a stick and an animal bawling in pain. Enough footage can create anything, video me running away from a calf proud cow and hitting it on nose, then edit it to a calm cow and me hitting across nose makes me looking after my safety to a demonic brute

I'd like to know which YFC branch produced those articles, and which sports clubs they are associated with.

I'm working purely on conjecture, and wanting to be wrong, but I would not be surprised - if they are connected with such organisations - if there's a correlation between the behaviour of the Yahoos and goings on at various Events.

Not necessarily the case that they are young farmers. I've certainly met some objectional characters in my life older than young farmers with no so much as a blue seal between them.

Would trust anything from PETA as far as I could throw them. Remember this person has joined these shearing gangs to find this evidence. They will not have bothered trying to work for reputable people. Never had any issues with any shearers, BUT when you get that one sheep that throws an absolute fit it will always look bad even if shearer is doing nothing wrong.
