they still dont know yet , maybe first live sale but they need to be very careful as defra will be all over it with any issues , they were talking about penning every other pen so vendors can stay in shed at viewing ,and people only going ringside to bid , which means any lambs that get impulse bids could suffer , everyone wants the pen leaders , but sellers rely on them to sell the rest .
could be online with 3 week return if animal has any faults (as wont be inspected) but in reality if i (in SW) bought and collected a ram from scotland im going to have trouble returning it if say overshot or bad feet ,(facebook pictures should have been on hard standing not on grass)
Then you have the 5 mile limit in wales , i know business is different ,but could still be difficult
Then where do sellers sleep if from afar , all hotels b/b shut , market cafe shut , except maybe takeaway, bit grim if travelling a long way . Are buyers going to travel with same issues .
Add to the story a lot are selling privately so reducing the catalogue daily , i would be a bit pssd if i was looking at a particular animal advertised on the website to travel and not present as already sold .
Going to be a bldy minefield all round

H&H have been doing sales online, so they must have sorted out all the ifs and buts.

Unless the country is operating as close to normal as possible, its really hard to see any of these sales to go ahead in the ring. As you say, there's no hotels or B&B's... logistically it will be impossible

iirc the original guidance was to take photos untrimmed and on concrete.....as if that was going to happen for a lot of them. Saw a picture of one the other day that had been sold privately, but not before trimming for the photo.?

I wish vendors well, but I certainly wouldn’t be interested in paying good money for a terminal stock ram without seeing him in the flesh, and most people I have spoken to have said the same. If the ‘physical’ sale does go ahead, a lot of breeders have already bought privately, removing competition ringside.

It’s going to be a funny old year that’s for sure.

In planning for our Exlana sale i spoke to many of our clients and they were all happy to bid online via a video as long as they had pics/videos/data beforehand
As one of them said '' we primarily buy on figures & you're not going to mess us around because it will only happen once''

yes agree , emma did say last week a lot had backed them down in wales (in february of course , before the guidelines lol yea right ! ) have bought many rams same as you , cant tell a thing looking at a picture especially with wooly ram lambs fed a high prot diet , how many times have you been disappointed whilst judging from initial impressions ?, you have a job to hide or wash the ingrained dirt on the neck from intensive indoor feeding though .
Figures will be important this year at least gives you half a chance. along with breeder reputation . Can see a lot sweating over their feed bills this summer

You see everything with a forage fed shedding sheep though. You can’t tell much when looking at a picture of lamb that’s had 7 months on ad-Lib concentrate, in full fleece, then carded and trimmed several times. Certainly not enough to push on with bids anyway.

your missing the point , prem sale is about selling the dream and how you can be part of it , not taking the breed forward , to quote : "Wealthy people are always looking for new ways to spend their money "

Think you are being a bit harsh there Andy. Almost all breeds have a premier sale or sales of some sort. Any breeder who wants to do his stock justice has to have them looking their best on that particular day and there is no doubt feeding is part of that. However, fed or not these are still the lambs that the breeder believed to be his/her best at the time they were drawn to be fed for the sale. In our own case we selected what we considered to be the best 5 lambs at weaning when they were probably about 40kg so in theory a good commercial stage. At least at a sale you can compare lambs from different flocks with different bloodlines and no one is forced to buy the biggest lamb in the sale. Also a lot of the highest indexed lambs in the breed will be sold at the premier sale so you obviously don;t think that is taking the breed forward either.
