Cheap ass strip till drill idea

Ive looked at these, and would do the job, too expensive to qualify as cheap ass though😂

A home made drill that won't cut seed in & costs you yield is very expensive! Suffolk coulters are fine in a fine loose tilth but not the kind of big slabs & surface residues they will be skidding over. Tine or disc, but not a Suffolk IMO.

Agree with whats been said. you simply wont get the pressure or depth control with a Suffolk Coulter. They will also become a rake. In you instance id sell what you have and buy a cheap tine drill to modify.
If you do have a go, please share your results!

Probably remain as one of those bright ideas. Have to go look at some tines instead, although still think it could work. It would only be pairs of coulters every 300mm so space for trash flow. Plus no chopped straw to deal with. So long as the leg leaves a fairly clean slot. Could run a d ring in the slot before and after the coulter. Before to crush the clod and consolidate for more even seed depth and after to consolidate the seed.

Brings back memories of trying to power harrow drill into stubble year's ago, the accord drill just turned into a straw rake!
Have often wondered about taking the tines out of every other rotor on the powerharrow and drilling in strips with disc coulters. Rudimental strip tillage with conventional kit.

I looked for disc coulter parts to fit my accord, took me down a completely different path, I brought an old Vaddy rapid which was a good drill, worn out but still way better than the accord.

I think you’d get on better doing this; you could pick up one of those mini subsoiler bars that go in between the powerharrow and tractor to get some drainage for little expense and you’ll have a decent rig

Why wont this work then?
Using what I have, subsoiler, changing legs to low disturbance, then use a long and short suffolk coulter to drill into strip behind the leg. In an ideal world then a press wheel to run after the coulter or a double disc coulter with a press wheel instead of suffolks.
What did you end up making?

In other news i picked up this little beauty recently, sort of by accident. Needed some legs having sold an x-press, and this was too good to miss. Follow it with some harrows and it could be a poor man's claydon. Was built I believe as a bean drill.
