Cheap Winter Bean Establishment

Looking to grow winter beans for first time this year, completely fed up with beet . Just wondered what the cheapest way of establishing them is while still getting a decent yield, not got a direct drill but open to ideas. Some going on lovely light black land , others going on heavy sticky c**p .
Thanks in advance

broadcast on the (clean) stubble and simply plough in at 5 to 6 inches (also practically better at 14 inch than 20 inch furrow width ) is what i used to do. might need to level the headland in a place or 2 but make a good job of ploughing and it doesnt need to be touched after , :oops:cultivation wise, which is also good for water/runoff catching.(y)

Did think about that but surely any pre em spray would be rendered useless by an uneven seed bed ?

Claydon is very good for beans but also I have as a last resort ploughed in on heavy land last year. A little rough for the sprayer but luckily the combine is on tracks so it can handle the rough better.

Does Claydon bust heavy land enough so seeds aren’t sitting in water filled slots? Just asking. I’d imagine a 3m one pass tine drill would need about 1000 hp on our heaviest if it was doing any good.

Grow spring beans is the answer IMO. Plough in the spring so it’s not sad as bulls liver. Drill with an MF30. Massive crop here this year…..if we can harvest them in late September and the worms don’t take them down.

I have never gone straight into stubble with it alway into low disturbance sumo’ed stubble. I cannot run the risk of not running a leg through most of my land.

Yes hence my, drill them early and deep. I’ve 185hp in a 3m and our home farm is some of the heaviest around (we have an old brick pit and kilns)

Yep, a Claydon certainly needs a big tractor .
Last ones I grew were ploughed in with a 4wd ursus (about the same as a massey 375 ) and a 3 furrow reversible, it was a nice little job when theres was not much else on in the first week in Nov. Was a while ago mind you.
