Cheapest way into strip tillage

Trash isn't an issue, stubbles are cut as short as possible and baked. No shortage of muck either. Power is a T7.210, on 650s, so 166 at the wheels, plus boost on hyd.

Have used a Moore before, the slugs loved it.
Slugs love anything that gives them food, I have found type of drill is a long way down the list of what effects them.

The Moore left a smeared slot the length of the field which the slugs took advantage of, and cleared the field. The farmers with the Moore are on their fourth or fifth drill and say they have had no success dding. Their conventional crops always look fantastic.

Old Co 4 with Gen or Dutch openers? Cheap to buy, doesn't require much power in front. I know it's not "true" striptill but if you got a decent rotation I am not sure you really need the deep loosing of the soil.
Only disadvantage is it doesn't like chopped straw combined a night, but a cheap rake can sort that out.

Best to ask @parker what a 750 will do in high Mag clay!
had a good walk around Simon's crops on Thursday some of the heaviest land I have seen (and glad i'm not farming)but all crops looked very well if the 750 closes the slot on that ground it can do it any where it has certainly given me the confidence to look into purchasing a 750, I have never seen worm casts so big or so many which has led to a much improved soil something to really shout about thanks again Simon a thoroughly enjoyable day,

That the French have gone through disc drillls and are coming back to tine based drills. Certainly they do not view strip tillage as a cardinal sin, just another tool in the box.
In the sologne yes, but the opposite in other areas! img027.jpg
this farm is 50kilometres north west of frederic
in summary ; sold plough 30 years ago
sow cover crop with combine, mix of sarrasin radish phacelie linseed fenugrec and clover, and roll after,
growing peas, wheat, rape, winter barley,
soil is heavy wet red clay with flint,
yield between 7 and 8 tonne hectere in milling wheat,
drilling with a brazilian disc drill
the slugs eat the cover crop and not the sown crop
gave up with a tine drill as it bought all the stones to the surface,

So the advice is buy a direct drill, or buy a new strip till or chuck it on and hope. No-one has suggested plough and combo....?

Well you were quit strict on what you wanted. If you want a cheap drill that is "strip till" in the new sense of the word then your option would be a Claydon V drill. Whether that is the best option is unknown, lots of farmers(Claydon fans included) have moved on from them.

Because its old fashioned and too realiable (y)

Why use a sledgehammer to crack a nut?

You're quite right, it is old fashioned but we've moved a long way forward from it. It is also reliable, I think if your a bit intellectually challenged and can't plan a bit ahead then you'd be better off sticking with the plough and ph combi. However it results in lower yields and is a much more expensive system on the whole and as my neighbour says there is no way he'd go back to those dark days! I think dd'ing is a combination of the best of both conventional farming and organic. It's more subtle than just beating everything into submission.
