Cheffins SALE REPORT AUGUST 2014

The sale on the 4th was a typical August sale but with the excellent weather it was a little more “August” than the norm! Most cereal farmers were getting stuck into the wheat harvest, some 2 weeks or so ahead of previous years and even autumn cultivations had started in some parts of the country. Such seasonality doesn’t help trade and other factors such as exchange rates, conflicts and poor agricultural commodity prices all contributed to a fairly lack lustre sale day. It was unsurprisingly the smallest sale of the year but once autumn begins we hope for more bullish trade as the year progresses.

Tractors

With some 350+ tractors entered, the selection was more concentrated than usual although perhaps for this month, that was no bad thing!

This 7530 with circa 3000 hours is off to Germany for circa £44,000

A unusually sharp looking Ford 7810 made £9000

Export tractor trade in the guise of Massey 100, 500 series etc was comparatively quiet given the few export buyers in attendance. We had a small number of East African bidders who bought numbers sufficient to fill a few containers and some domestic exporters out bid the overseas buyers to secure the majority of the 590’s. Prices were in line with recent sales: 590’s circa £3000, 290’s £5-5500 and 165’s were variable depending on the spec. We were expecting a number of buyers from the Middle East but flight problems prevented their arrival although we hope to see them in September. There was some trade for Ford 3000, 4000’s etc and this were pretty well much monopolised by some Mid Asian buyers. Older Zetors, Universals etc were a struggle as harvesting and perhaps the conflict in the Ukraine curtailed this often thriving trade.

Newer models did fare somewhat better and almost 50% of such found new homes. Massey Ferguson 3000 and 6000 almost sold out as a certain trade buyer snapped up just about all of them! Ford 6600’s etc continued their poor run of form although 10 & 40 series did better: a direct from farm 7810, Carraro axle was pushed to £7000, a sharper version sold for £9000, a 4wd 7610 with bubble cab achieved over £4100 and a 7840 manual model sold for £7600. We had a whole line up of imported TN65 and 75’s which attracted considerable attention and all sold circa £4500-5000 and the best New Holland in the sale was a 2011 T6070 c/w loader which made circa £31,000.

Johns Deeres were a little more selective as the variety of models and plethora of European buyers were less than the spring sales. Spanish buyers were present although for once, they were often out bid by domestic traders, one or two Germans and even some Irish buyers. Models sold would feature a 2009 7530 with circa 3000 hours which topped £43,000, a 2008 6830 Premium is off to Spain for £27,000, Bulgarian money bought a plain 8100 for £17,000 and a respectable 6100 with a JD loader and the all important air con’ sold well for circa £11,000.

Plant

With harvest in full swing, a high value pound, problems getting flights for some export buyers, wars continuing in several parts of the world and it being the holiday period for many people, we didn’t have particularly high expectations when we started the Contractor’s Plant section on Monday. A smaller entry than usual due mainly to some vendors attending to other, more pressing obligations at this time of year, left us with plenty of gaps between a still varied collection of machines for sale.

Unfortunately the supply of digger loaders fell short of even the slightly reduced demand and some Middle Eastern buyers who did manage to get here were unable to fill their orders. Well presented JCBs from the early to mid 2000’s were on their shopping lists but were regrettably not here.

On to the telescopics and a limited demand from a smaller crowd of buyers left the percentage sold lower than in recent months. There were some highlights though with a few of those sold soaring over their reserves. Most are staying in the UK but some sold to buyers from Germany, Spain, Eire and Poland. Smaller Manitous and John Deeres appeared more attractive to mainland European buyers than they have done recently.

We found buyers for some of the loading shovels from the UK and Poland but the larger tracked excavators proved difficult to sell with just a Caterpillar 312 finding a new UK home.

Mini diggers created some interest with French and UK buyers leaving a few that just failed to meet their reserves. Dumpers are still attracting plenty of bids with those sold mainly going to the home trade. We struggled with skid steers and industrial forklifts this month which is probably partly due to the temporary lack of Middle Eastern buyers.

August is normally our quietest month both from an entry and sale point of view which we traditionally make up for in September.

Machinery

A slightly smaller quantity of machinery awaited us at the beginning of the August machinery sale, which was to be expected given the time of year and the fantastic weather we have had during the past weeks. We kicked off with the usual line up of assorted spreaders, the pick of which was a 2009 Reco Sulky X36 spreader which sold at £3900, and is off to a new residence in Germany. The standout performers in the mounted machinery section were definitely the hedgecutters, a great crowd gathered round to inspect and bid on these fine machines with over 70% selling. A magnificent 2008 McConnell PA65HT cleared £8600 and a tidy McConnell PA 7000T hedgecutter flew away at £4750.

Mower trade continues to remain a cut above the rest with over 60% selling, one of the finest was a very clean Krone AM283s disc mower which made over two times its reserve clearing £2500, swiftly followed up by an impressive Taarup 4032 which battled up to an impressive £3900, finding a new home in Ireland. Baler trade has been quite encouraging in recent months with them finding new homes all around the world, one of the best on display was a very clean Claas 454 baler which made a cracking £11000 and a tidy Welger AP630 attracted a lot of interest before securing £6300.

Always popular, this 1700 houred Gator stormed to almost £7000

We had a large number of trailers on offer on Monday, ranging for small livestock trailers to the larger grain trailers. There was a lot of interest from the offset, with a grand twenty selling, their end destinations being mainly England, Ireland and Poland. The people’s favourite this month was definitely the Ifor Williams selection with just under 80% selling.

Horticultural

Although not a very popular month for mowers and grass keeping machinery August proved to be an exception with over 55% being sold. John Deere variants are as popular as ever with a GX355 topping £2000 and a Z425 model being sold for £1600. John Deere Gators are also keenly sought after and there were 2 clean and tidy examples available this month both selling well for £6600 and £4800 respectively.

With some of the overseas buyers absent this month there were more engines to go around and just short of 50% of entered lots motored away, with 4 and 6cyl Perkins, as popular as ever, being sold for around the £600 figure and Mercedes engines complete with gearboxes fetching the £750 mark. Smaller 2cyl and 3cyl Ford and Lister engines were good for the overseas market and although not as popular as the big ones, were snatched up by the overseas buyers at around £300 each.

Spares of all types from filters to tractor cabs are popular with everybody and good quality spares were in abundance this month, always a popular part of the sale, well over 50% found new homes. Clean standard Massey Ferguson tractor cabs were being sold around the £250 mark but if the cab is undamaged and paintwork clean, they can fetch more than double that figure at £600. Wheel and tyres, like any spares, are always needed and sold well, with over 50% rolling away. Wheels and tyres need to be in full sets if possible or at least in matching pairs with a quantity of tread.
