Chequers - The Master Plan

I think Chequers could be the best master plan in politics in a long time and if May pulls it off she’s a hero. Here’s how it works:

The deal has always been Canada plus. There are two issues. Parliament would not have voted for it in a majority out of the gate and the EU would not have agreed to the Irish technology border.

So the Tory party get together at Chequers and come up with a plan. Create a seudo deal that we sell to the British public as “Softish” but actually completey breaks the EU rules so can never be accepted. Boris - when we roll this out go and make a big song and dance in the media about how we are handing power to Europe and use some silly analogy that the great unwashed can get behind, DD - go to ground and figure out this Irish technology thing, let Moggy think he invented it and he’s the smartest man on earth. I will sell this dead duck to Europe and make them look like they are totally unreasonable when they reject it.

Roll on a couple of weeks. May pulls out Canada plus as the last ditch effort with Europe to avoid WTO. Of course they accept it as they have already offered it. They also agree to the Irish technology border to try and look reasonable after the last schellacking.

Come back home waving the deal like peace in our time clement atley style and the MPs have to vote for it as the aledged soft deal has already been rejected by the EU so it’s that or WTO.

Everyone wins and Boris and DD get jobs in the next parliament.

She’s drawing it out a bit. But so far on plan.

Was watching the play earlier with the old folks.

Interesting to see the "Backstop" being replaced with "Alternative Plans" .. which are unspecified !

The crux of the issue is to satisfy Canada plus and the Good Friday agreement you need the technology border in Ireland. They won’t agree to it if there is an opportunity not to agree to it which was the case with the back stop. A lot of fancy language going to be required to make both sides think they won

Which technology do you refer to?

The Irish issue is merely incidental, you might get the paltry support of the DUP but Mays 'deal' if you can call it that, doesn't even have the backing of the full fill of her own party so adding the DUP to the ayes won't help them.

Labour are understandably going to ride this pony for it all its worth, hoping it will be no deal and in the turmoil that results they will trigger a proper no-confidence vote and gain power.

I can't see May lasting the year.

Parliament voted today with a majority that they would back the deal with the backstop re-worked.

Do what the Germans always do. Waste time and play for penalties

Well we are getting into squeaky bum time now. Think she will just tap it around the back four a while, while Centre Forward May is hoping she will place a forward pass to her Brussels midfielders. Going to be fun to watch. And penalties might well be the outcome. When is the latest, truly latest date and time to agree the deal?
