Is starting a new free range chicken farm profitable. There are a few in my area (southwest uk/Wales borders) but not sure many are free range and the birds aren't let well in many

Depends what size/system you are talking about ,
I run a 50k bird free range broilers in south west

it’s not a bad earner but start up cost are huge , 200k ish for 10k bird shed.

also not sure if there are contracts available

Wow! That's a large farm. How many people work for you?

Yes when done in the right way you can achieve a profit of 60% to 70% on each batch you do.
