Chicken feed

So we are getting a couple of chicks (female) to grow on and use for back yard chickens for eggs.

The wife pops into pets at home to pick up some chick crumb today. And the person at the till tells her that once they reach 6-8 weeks they need to go onto growers mash/pellets then when they start laying eggs don’t eat them because they are ‘poisonous’ ? then move them onto layers pellets wait a few eggs then they will be ok to eat!

This sounds like total bulls**t to me!

Thoughts?

only raised a handful of chicks and some ducklings but we just went straight from chick crumb to layers pellets. hens and ducks seem fine to me, they're healthy looking and lay plenty of eggs. is growers mash for meat birds maybe?
I dunno.

Balls. The growers pellets may be medicated in which case there could be a withdrawal period. You could probably find some unmedicated feed if it bothered you.

As others have said, it is rubbish. Move on to "chicken corn" if you are worried - this is whole grains and what I feed my chooks. (and a host of local birds who clear up anything missed).

I think you're right, but don't think i'd knowingly eat medicated product within withdrawal period, unless the panic buying continues then i'll just eat anything i suppose....

If it's Dodson and Horrell chick crumb it's only meant to be used to 8 weeks, so you'll not get any eggs by then anyway, but it's unmedicated, there's nothing in it that'll make the eggs unsafe.

It'll just be nutritionally balanced for the wrong part of the chicken's life cycle.
