@choochter how did you get on in the end?
I've one at 9 months old showing signs of being in calf this morning. Vet is coming out but it's less than ideal..
Thank-you for asking.

All 3 heifers aborted and cleansed but 2 needed a shot of antibiotics. All recovered well but 2 have milk and have been suckled by others in the group so I’ve had to distribute them across several groups in the shed to keep each away from the other.

From now on it might be a plan to keep cows with heifer calves away from the bull group and AI them, there probably won’t be many as this bull and his father and grandfather always get 70% male calves.

I’ve discovered another heifer, too far on to abort, and she will calve in the next couple of months at 17 months. At least I know that the bull she’s in calve to calves easy and I’ve another 3 heifers in calve to him, but they’ll calve at 26 mths.

She’s only 450kgs now so don’t know how it will all pan out.

Glad to hear things went well then. I have one who has never been pally with the bull, and I am with them several times a day, but the look of her is worrying me. Could just be a belly full of haylage but the vet will be out to PD a cow before a sale, so I'm going to get her checked. Fingers crossed.

I had one calve at 17 months at a similar weight, she calved on her own to a Limmy bull but did not calve again until she was 36 months. I suppose that sort of looks ok with 2 calves by three years old:scratchhead:. She is a cracking cow though, nothing special to look at but has good calf.

Estrumate all my heifers at weaning and never had a problem, had a bunch of 20 heifers that got mixed with a bunch of steers with one uncut, had one ball young, when vet cut him at 9 months he had a job to get is as so high, told highly unlikely to breed as ball so small, jabbed heifers anyway as routine, but got 3 showing bags now, guess 7 months in calf, not for the first time but I could shoot the footpath walker that left gate to green lane open, and fair enough someone put them in nearest field, shame it was a bunch of heifers. Was told 90% reliable estrumate, but on suck calves that are likely just to be an odd month in calf generally, these older heifers may have been 3/4 months in calf when jabbed so my own fault, just didn't imagine it would happen. If he was a favourite show bull with one ball half the size of a marble and I tried selling semen I know he wouldn't be so fertile!!!

She was Born 25/5/10. One of the best cows I have. 1st calf was a dwarf thing sold at 24months was only 400kg. Can’t remember price it made but £580 sticks out. Ever since then consistently produces a U grading calf any man be happy with.

cought up a lot of time aswell must be calving every 11 month!

Yes we have changed things abit here. Calving dragging for too long and found late calves to be no use on our farm. Been putting the bull in earlier and then pulling him out in August been pleased so far. Cows have generally all come forward every year. Look after them well 1st 6 weeks, they usually respond.

Happy ending to this story. The heifer calved at 18 months old weighing 450kg - a wee heifer calf sized directly in proportion to her mum. No help needed.

Gave her an extra 6 months to grow on then AI'd her to a nice Bazadaise bull, held first time and calved 2 weeks ago at age 3 years, another heifer calf.

jabbing doesn't always work, 2018, we did full sync programme on 70's hfrs, 1 calved 2months early, with a full time Hereford calf, programme was prid, oest. and acegon.
