Child safety fears raised over family farm TV show

I'm OK with discussing it, and reminding us all not to do (too) stupid things, but the extreme ends of the discussion beggar belief.

And yet others sadly want to condone said stupid things. Or make out they’re acceptable.

Given the death and injury record in agriculture, we clearly aren’t (collectively) doing enough of the awareness bit.

OK then, lets talk about it.

Looking around at the fatalities locally involving quads...
Several have involved older farmers, and as I recall, the inquest usually finds they'd had a medical emergency/ issues before they went over.
A couple tragically involving youngsters come to mind. One was not in what I would call a genuine 'farm situation', the other was a trainee going too fast on a road, and was an RTA rather than a farm accident. I'm not sure whether helmets would've saved either.

I don't use such a device myself, although thats more about general health, and the risk of expensive injuries rather than fear of a fatal.

PTO's? Yes there was a hideous case locally, seemingly involving the grossest incompetence you can imagine.
(allowing a youngster to stand working at a machine almost brushing against an unguarded pto.)
There's no defence there.
And the rule of thumb hereabouts stands...never go near it, guarded or not, when it's running.

Livestock? Several of the nasties I can recall have involved experienced old blokes -and i realise I'm heading into that club now- being over familiar with a bull who clearly senses he now has the upper hand.
I've written about such matters at length over the years, and it's almost impossible to convey the subtleties involved.
Shutting bulls in a cage like a wild animal will make them just that.
And if you've got a bull which is getting a bit handy, and you don't know how to re-educate him -or he's become beyond education- kill him right now. don't wait.
There isn't nearly enough money in cattle to do anything else.

Cows newly calved? Know they#re unpredictable, act accordingly and accept the risk...or get out of cattle farming.

Cows with calves on access land? I'm less sympathetic. If my cows don't graze that land, Joe Public wouldn't be able to walk on it.
If he wants to come into the country, he needs to educate hisself, or keep within the reach of streetlights.

Slurry stores/fumes? They've surely been the cause of a lot of dreadful heartache. I don't have such things, but presume education is the key.

Falling from heights? I'm not sure what to think about it.
Generally, what kind of childhood did you have not to know that falling off stuff hurts, and we're into what is common sense?
This spills over into most other potential risks.
We all take risks based on our assessment moment by moment, and some of us are lucky/and or better judges, and some of us are not.

Obviously, there is a duty of care on anyone directing another, and my own rule of thumb is not to ask anyone to do anything I wouldn't do, or be happy that they're within their comfort zone.
Leaving stuff around for kids or idiots to hurt themselves on is something we should all try and avoid, although we get back to the point that you can't guard against every level of stupid.

I've become more risk averse with age, but I'm guessing that's natural and normal, but would hate to live in the world portrayed by some.
I have always, and will continue, to take risks many people would shiver at, but never hesitate to acknowledge that where it's me, doing my thing, it's my choice to take.
If my number comes up, so be it.

Take care now.
