But covid had spread before anyone knew about it, it only takes one person to move between two places, without the testing capacity you cant contain it, china had almost total lockdown in the original province and still they have it, Oz and NZ banned virtually all entrants and shut any who did come in in quarantine and still they have cases, only 100% lockdown for at leasr three weeks might work and that is impossible, no food, no electric, no police no hospitals

There is likely dozens of pandemics that have been stopped by localised lock downs.

No one knows how worse covid would have been without lockdowns. But no doubt if Italy had shut down its ski resorts, China had alerted the world earlier, that cruise ship had not infected everyone & then sent them all over the world. More people would have lived to benefit from the vaccines.

But forget covid the next one might be as lethal as Spanish flu better to lock down than find hundreds of millions are dead.

No one knew how bad Covid was a mutation could have made it worse. Governments had to act early.

I'd rather check the ewes twice a day at this time of the year, than think no problems last few days & think checking every other day would do & then find a good ewe cast & almost dead with its eyes pecked out.

Do lockdowns work? if so at what price? A ruined economy? maybe a few Covid deaths were prevented? How many died as a result of being unable to get access to hospital care for other ailments?

We also didn't know anything much about Covid, had no vaccine and thousands were dying in a very unpleasant way. So locking down was/is the only viable way a government can react in the face of such unknowns. And it undoubtedly saved thousands of lives in many countries.
