We're all going to plant Extase in 2020, and some time between 2021 and 2024 it's resistance will break down.
This has happened so very often with the rusts, PSQ, all the way from Perdix to Cambier to the Stigg, but not often, so far, with varieties with exceptional septoria resistance.

For example, the variety Exsept is still going strong here after 20 years or so.

Fortunately, Exsept was never recommended by the HGCA because, at the time, their highest-yielding trials were planted far too late for it, thereby completely missing its big commercial advantage.

The date was decided to maximize the competitive advantage to be gained by our Continental kin.

No, it was decided by Brussels because that was 12 months after their decision to pull it. You're suggesting there was an ulterior motive. I suggest there was no motive at all, nor thought to the practical implications by a bunch of bureaucrats sat in an ivory tower.

It will be the day to put it on for sure. That's the ridiculous this about this. Why couldn;t the date be august to allow us a full season of use. Why stop it half way though - shows how little common sense there is in this process.

Common Sense? What’s that? I think it was last heard of last century!

CTL failed the criteria for re-registration on several counts. Aquatic species toxicity, occurrence in groundwater, damage to DNA and a link to bee damage were some of those.

I've little doubt that being off patent and a lack of willing to invest in defending it collectively by several manufacturers was an additional one.

I would agree - just no thought put to it at all. Unlike their expense claims which seem to be very much thought through.

Chris,
How are they going to detect useage after that date, is it easy to measure in the grain?

I have no idea to be honest. There are a lot of theories going around about what can and can;t be done. I do know the cheapest way to get rid of it is to spray it though and I'll be very surprised if lots gets disposed of in other ways.

CTL can be detected on grain down to quite low levels as our wheat is tested for it and the contract we grow it under doesn't allow us to use CTL in our fungicide program. That said that only shows whether it is present or not, not the date it was applied. The test costs quite a lot of money as well I believe so I doubt they are going to start testing wheat in every grainstore this harvest. I would imagine the only problem that might arise is if you still have cans of CTL in the chem store when the Red Tractor inspector comes round.

I think after it was banned by Brussels, each country gets given a maximum time limit by which it must stopped being sold and then used by. Sometimes countries choose to have sale and use-up periods quite quick, but I think 12 months maximum is normally the latest period by which it must be used by.

My Feb drilled winter wheat currently looks like a poor spring spring wheat and hasn't even reached gs 30 yet so it looks like 20 May is going to need to be 2 weeks long in order for me to apply the T2 Ctl.

Wack it on the 20th, should give some protection for a week or two when the disease pressure will then shift to rusts.

We pay bloody levies HGCA, PGRO should fund the work to protect or extend use of generics if manufactures won’t!! How did UK Quinoa get approval for any plant protection products, manufactures didn’t do it, it’s all been self funded by the industry
