Seeing as a lot of my flock management is down to information on here one thing I have been thinking about lately is the best way to decide what replacement ewes to pick. For the next couple of year I am going to keep all ewe lambs tup them as shearings then pick the ones that did the best job to join the flock then with a bit of luck I will get a decent price selling a two shear ewe.
The perfect gimmer for me would be
1. high daily lamb weight gain
2.born in the first three weeks
3.recovers enough and is in good condition going to the tup.
Any empty or lambing problems would be away.
1. weight the lamb at birth then weaning.
2.simple after 3 weeks notch lambs
3. I would weight the gimmer at weaning and then again at tupping along with condition score.
Should there be anything else I should think about when deciding would that be your the order of preference.
Say A-lambed at 4 weeks had good daily weight gain lamb but never put on much weight herself post weaning. B- lambed 1 week low daily weight gains but recovered well post weaning.
which one would join the flock
