Chris Packham to deliver petition to rewild Balmoral today

When a society starts to consider its farmers the enemy, the writing must be on the wall. It's just a question of which "barbarians" (ie hard nuts) will be waiting at the gates to march in.
Exactly my thoughts, it does seem like the beginning of the end of civilised society, when the host turns on the very thing that has both created and sustained it.
But doesn't every civilisation eventually die out when their bellies and ideas get too full of themselves?
We won't need to save the planet if this current directon continues.

No matter what you think of his views the nutters who set a Land Rover on fire against his gates deserve severe punishment. Just serves to harden opinions.
It would be interesting to know the full story though. Seems an odd thing to do to torch a valuable Disco in someone's gateway just because you disagree with what he says on TV. I can understand drunk shooters leaving dead badgers outside as a silly prank, but a (stolen?) Disco?

. I suggest Chris buys his own farm/s and lets them revert to scrub if he wants.
I have said the above on here before.
In all seriousness I am sure that Packham could quite easily get his followers to donate £10,000,000 or more to buy a hill farm where it could demonstrate his ideas, and show he’s making a profit.
As I say I’m being serious, but will he ever put his money where his mouth is ??? I doubt it

I thought it was reasonably common for stolen vehicles to get torched

It is always happening in the New Forest, where there are plenty of Landies and a nearby feral youth population. The one where we keep some sheep was nicked recently and found burned out after ram raiding a cash point. I think Chris is possibly getting some victimhood credit where in reality, it was nothing to do with him per se.

A stupid act and it gets him lots of publicity and sympathy. Nothing better than becoming a martyr for your cause.

Sounds more like a wanton act of vandalism than anything with any political or environmental motive. Nobody in the rural community would be daft enough to torch their own vehicle in front of his gates and I think it highly unlikely that anybody who worked in the countryside would steal a vehicle and do the same.
It’s just the sort of mindless vandalism that affects us all.

Understandably, given the apparent threat to his personal safety.

I don't see why people see him as such a threat. His views don't upset me.

I completely agree that anyone is at liberty to have a fence around their house but it doesn't seem to have been done with much consideration for the trees stood there.

I don't care a hoot about the bloke either. He is a fantasist in my view, which is AOK of course but back in the real world environmentalism isn't a single problem with a single solution. It requires careful long-term and holistic thinking. Mankind does not have a good track record when it comes to meddling in the environment.

I would like to see an impact study that models the effect all these lynx, wolves and bears have if they were released. It's obvious they would become scavengers and probably adapt to living close to human populations merely because the availability of food would be much much higher than in the wild.

Agree with all of that.

As posted by @Kevtherev on another thread, these self publicising fantasists are really an enemy within

Monbiot attended Cumbrian farmer discussion facilitated with / by @Old Tip and then he launches an attack on the sustainable food / Pasture For Life side of farming . You just can't win. I honestly believe they'll only be happy when all of Britain is urban or rewilded

It seems to be a backhanded way of spreading class-hate and jealousy. It's not really about wildlife, it's more about jealousy and envy of what other people own. Rewilding appeals to these people as it implies public access somewhere down the line, and it is a victory over the hated royals. Sadly, covetousness is spreading rapidly, and can be seen all over social media in such diverse areas as "Urban exploration", "hedgerow tractor finds", barn finds and eco groups. Look at the success of the award-winning Book of Trespass. :(
