What I used to love and haven't been able to get for years, is Chinese sugared figs, which used to come in a hexagonal black and red cardboard box with a gold dragon on the front. The figs were a tear-shape and dipped in sugar.
Crikey another blast from the past. I remember them. Mum always used to get a box at Christmas....

As kids at Christmas we were allowed one alcoholic drink on Christmas day - either a small glass of home made wine or that classic.... a Snowball made with Warninks Advocat. Can't stand the stuff now, but seemed so special at the time!
Rediscovered Advocaat and lemonade snowball this Christmas - then found out you could buy it ready made in a tin.

I guess that when Wolfe took the Heights of Quebec he ate all the stilton him self and didn't leave any for the locals to savour and pass down. :(

Had a Canadian national (ex Mounted Policeman) and his partner visit some years ago and we took them to Chester for a day and discovered that they didn't know what a shandy was and also had never eaten cheese with fruit in it! :rolleyes:

Once drove down through Quebec on our way to Boston and the whole place was full of French nationals; well, that's what they kept saying they were. ;) We are not Canadians, WE ARE FRENCH! :eek:

The Canadian French saga is a totally bizarare. They can be born in Canada the same as their parents and grandparents but still say they are from France and that’s their home Which they have never even visited let alone lived there.

Someone gave us some real ripe Camembert, and even in the sealed wrapper, it stunk.... a lot! Herself took it off to the cousins who wanged it in teh oven and scoffed it. I don't like it, which is unusual for me with cheese,
Mrs lbp bakes them inside a loaf of bread.👍As a treat homemade chutney goes on top of the cheese😁

Do people still buy Harvey's Bristol Cream, Mum always used to leave some out on Christmas Eve for Father Christmas along with a mince pie, when we were kids.
We continued the tradition when our kids were small, but left carrots in the garden for the reindeer too. I would sprikle flour over my wellies to form footprints up the path, and collect some sheep bumbles to leave where the carrots had been, to look like deer droppings. I used to stick a bit of cotton wool to the rim of the sherry glass after I had necked it, like Santa had left some beard behind.
To this day I'd rather drink Harvey's than spirits.
Mum had an old lady as a friend who we called Auntie Gwen, old people were always Auntie or Uncle, she would give us kids things like the aforementioned Newberry Fruits, that had obviously been recycled from some previous year, because they used to both stink and taste of mothballs. Another Auntie, Lola, a sophisticated German lady who had escaped Germany before The War, would always be presented with 60 Chesterfield unfiltered cigs. One year she was away somewhere well into the New Year, and so Mum and I filched the Chesterfields over the following weeks, so as not to waste them.
As to After Eights; our girls, who would have been aged between 7 and 12 at the time, will still tell of the evening when at about half past six , I jumped theatrically up off the settee and collapsed, apparently quite dead, as a result of poisoning from the After Eights we had just been eating, before it was safe to do so at Eight..

I'm remembering things here that I had totally forgotten about, newberry fruits and orange and lemon slices.
I had also tried to wipe out the memory of Bristol Cream sherry, can't stand the stuff but useful as anaesthetic for elderly relatives.

We've a window on the landing that looks out onto the outside of the chimney breast and the roof pf the single storey bit of the house.
The kids used to put some silage in a haynet next to the chimney.
Before morning I'd 'pop' a few dryish cow pats, suitably reindeer spaced' on the single storey tiles and empty the haynet.

It was worth all the effort just to see their little faces on Christmas morning 😍

The best that "Father Christmas" managed in his vists here was a bite out of a mince pie, and the carrot was half eaten by a reindeer.... Oh yes, he had drunk the whiskey left for him....

They'd run out of litres and so they sent me two 70 cL bottles for the same price . Good that ! I've just started on the second . A couple of cream crackers with Eastman's Brussels pate on them and a slug of Harveys constitutes my mid day snack these days. Each to his own is what I say .
