Christmas begging has started early this year!

Saturday I recieved a text from a horse lady I have delivered 4 bales to. Asking if she could pay what she’s owes after Christmas. In a nice manner she was told no we need to money in for our bills and wages. This was the first one of this season. Anyway the illness must have spread very quickly in the equine world in these parts as come yesterday evening after leavening my phone at home whilst out for the afternoon. I came back to another 5 or so asking if they could pay after Christmas.

I’ve noticed a pattern as it’s all the ones who’s horses and yards are hovels, cesspits, pits of misery and down right uninhabbitable. Have kids and can’t afford them than have a horse or two and can’t afford them neither.

The mind boggles at how these people bimble though life and are so cheeky and carefree. I’ve always had one or two like this but times are getting harder and this seems to be getting more common every year. Yet they still go out drinking, have their nails done and fancy frocks and cars.

It’s always us though that they try to eek out or cream off. Probably because the bank wouldn't entertain it nor the petrol station or wine bar after drinking the bottle of wine.

Typical love hate relationship with the equine fraternity. Sometime they make you a lot of money on jobs and sales. Other times you just want to bash their heads in to make them realise the error of their ways and stupidity.

As you've already stated @Rob-B , they are breeding and the next generation will more than likely be worse. The blame game will continue because it's always someone else's fault!

Good luck with getting what's owed to you!

There is not a worry about consequences for their own actions today. There is a huge expectation someone else will cover their own mess.. be it breed like wildfire another generation of degenerates and live off the state or simply not pay their bills thinking it's ok to have someone else foot the bill with not one idea of who or how.

I think the none too bright and those lacking decency are ahead of the game slightly as they've been carried along too far and easily off others doing.

My daughter has just finished her equine apprenticeship and was given a letter from her boss last week to say that now that has finished all they can offer her is a zero hours contract. Needless to say she's gutted :(

I decided this year to try to persuade some of my horse customers to forward think and have some hay off the field instead of ringing me up 1/2 hr before they run out wanting some straight away. Foolishly I offered for them to have it off the field but pay when they use it but they must have a minimum of 4 large square bales. Out of the 7 who took up the offer only one has offered any money yet and I know that 1 has already run out and buying elsewhere.! I only offered it to my reliable customers 5 of which are in the same stable yard so it made delivery very easy . Next year back to the old system....pay on delivery !
Like my late father said " horse people...they aren't like normal human beings"

God I detest these generalized statements that people with horses have no bloody money and are bad payers, and are somehow different to many other people akin to businesses on here!

I suppose therefore All Farmers have loads of money in the bank, never take credit and then for some - have a business model built on overdafts, taking government payments to keep them afloat... or they would sink due to poor business model and sh!t cash flow control!!

Maybe you should be more diligent with your business and take the money on delivery for everything you sold, instead of moaning when you are put in this position...

I always buy off the field if possible, when I didn't have sheds half my garden would be covered in round bale haylage. I always pay cash but the chap that delivered it got a payment machine because he was so fed up of turning up with a full load and them having no cash.
Sum up machines are so cheap now, you pair them with your mobile, I would pay the commission and let the credit card company chase them for the money.

Try having liveries & pony paddocks let out. You'll soon change your tune! Most are ok, but like many areas in life, it's the bad minority that gets them all tarred with the same brush.

Apparently, I'm creating a toxic chemical soaked wasteland responsible for the world's pollution, despite direct drilling & 11% of the farm taken out of production for environmental features including watercourse protection. Do you ever get put down as one of these environmental pariahs or are you not a farmer? If that's the case, please state your profession.

A mate used to work at a vets practice in Essex where they did both equine and farm animal work. He reckoned that the boss had difficulty extracting cash from some of the farmers and from some of the horse owners alike.

Interestingly the equine clients that were easiest to deal with from a financial point of view were the ‘traveller’ types - ALWAYS paid then and there, in cash. Where they were getting the cash from would be a different matter...

Or its maybe a case i’m too trusting and have a honest mentality and attitude where by my word is my bond and perceive everyone else to be the same. @Dave W can vouch for that as when I’ve said I’ll have a machine I have and paid straight away. I didn’t make a generalisation on equine people as a whole. More of the ones that owe me this money or want credit over Christmas as they seem to fall into a certain catagory have a great deal of similarities.

Not sure how to read your post if I am honest Brisel, so I will tread carefully at this point to avoid any misunderstanding..

I will therefore answer in part, until I understand fully which angle you are coming at me from here - be that a personal dig of some kind following your pariah quip or something else..

We moved into a rather neglected property with 25 acres due to our requirements of land for our horses.

Currently (as can be read on here) we have been / are buying certain items of agricultural equipment to repair stock fencing / damage caused to the land through ignorance and neglect, reading what I can to learn more about certain skills I will need whilst setting up a smallholding to allow for keeping / culling our own reared stock etc...

We currently have a local farmer graze our fields FOC as we are not out to f**k anyone over and we will always look to try to help where we are able. We take nothing for granted and we value the support we are given when given... But equally will comment when generalised comments are made.

In relation to liveries and pony paddocks, well, our property is set out for full commercial livery, but I chose not to go this route to avoid potential issues that could arise as a result, much like I would ask for cash on delivery instead of moaning later...
It is just how I work, as for me, there is no point moaning about something, if it can be avoided in the first instance... Life is simply far too short..

Additionally, we pay for everything before (up front) or on delivery - as we do not like keeping people waiting for their money that is owed, as we know and appreciate it can impact a business cash flow adversely.

10% seem OK. They set about ordering their winter requirements last June/ July. The rest are clowns. I sometimes wish we'd had a " proper " drought this year. Then those that order 1 bale at a time, wanting delivered at a moments notice, only to disappear off the face of the planet at the very moment where money has to change hands could have had their comeuppance.

The above looks like a generalised statement to me...
