Claas 697 4 wheel drive problems

Wondering if anyone can shed some light on an issue I’m having. Just recently got a new (to me) Claas 697 and everything seems to work as it should bar the 4 wheel drive. It works fine under breaking but not on the switch. The diff lock won’t go on either. I’m getting an intermittent transmission filter light on occasion too but other than that all seems fine. Any suggestions on where to start diagnosing.

I was going to start at the switch and se that it works and take it from their. The diff light flashes on for a few seconds if you flick it on but Having never had it working I wonder if the diff will only engage if it’s in 4wheel drive.

I'm pretty sure it’s an electric issue as it works on the breaks.

on another note I don’t have a user manual and have no idea how the auto transmission control works. Nor what the buttons on the front of the gear/hand throttle do, not the gear buttons or the headland button. Any help would be appreciated.

Had similar on our case maxxum and it was the switch which was piggybacked onto the brake light wiring. Worked when braking but dodgy on a steep bank when needed

I'd start by checking the switches on the pedals are adjusted correctly. Do you get the green light on when pressing switch? 4wd won't engage on switch if your foot is on brake.

I tried the switches while driving, while stationery, with or without clutch etc. No joy. No light coming on at any point, but like I said it works fine for 4 wheel drive breaking. I tested it up a steep slope to be sure and back wheels spun then tickled the breaks and the front wheels kicked in as they should. Just the manual operation of 4wheel drive on the button that’s the issue.
I’m going to dig into the problem tomorrow and see what I can find. Crack out the old multimeter.

The switch may be multi use like on the old maxxums,3pairs of contacts

Don't know much about the electronics but could it be to do with the auto system? Press it and it automatically drops out above a certain speed, press and hold for about 5 seconds and the light flickers and then it's in till you press the switch to disengage

Managed to get the 4 wheel drive working but still not the diff lock. The light flashed on when you switch it but won’t stay on. Tried it in and out of 4 wheel drive, moving and stationary.

think the 4 wheel drive is possibly due to filings in the hydraulic system. Getting some intermittent glitches with other bits and bobs and the hydraulic filter light is on from time to time. Got a new set of filters ordered so I’ll see what the old ones look like when cut open and if the new ones help it. Not sure if the diff lock will be a similar issue.

re diff lock, try pulling the pedals up with foot will it work then? My money still on the switch not adjusted correctly, by pressing brakes it disengages diff lock.

Spot on with that. It was the brake switch that was causing the diff issues. It was actually the wee plate that the switch lands on. It had moved been over tightened and bent and was flopping about.

Good news is that’s fixed and the issues with the transmission was the clutch position sensor acting up. So that’s the diff working but annoying as it is the bloody 4 wheel drive is now not working. I’m guessing it’s something to do with the new switches. The clutch was set up by the dealer and everything was checked on the laptop and all good, bar the brake switch which was flagged up by the computer but had to get that posted out. Now fitted them and fixed the wee arm that moves them now getting no 4x4. The light won’t come when the switch is flicked or with brakes.

Anyone know how to set the switches up properly. Thought I had them set about right but now I’m not sure. Any other suggestions.

Fuse? Strange if no 4WD light at all, though one of mine the bulb is ducked but the 4WD Stil works if on road do just back wheels lock up when braking?

if it helps!
