Claas/MF spool preblem.

Have an 2007 Claas 697 with manual spools & have a problem with No: 1 spool.
It will pump oil out through both ports but only let oil back in through 1 port, had a bit of a look at it yesterday & it behaves like there is a 1 way valve in the offending port, had to slacken the pipe off to get the fitting to let go.
Had a quick fiddle with the knobs on top but didn't seem to make any difference.
Only bought the tractor recently so not familiar with them, same spools as MF but which model I don't know?

Any ideas before I pull it apart maybe needlessly? A new slice would sort it but hope I don't need to go there.

Closed centre hydraulics, or certainly spool valves. On MF they would all be four position slices including float. It could be a simple faulty QR coupler, which is what I'd look at first. Along with making sure that the Bowden cable actually pulls and pushes the spool itself to its full potential travel.

Closed centre & LS, pipes on the side running forward to a loader block, don't have the loader.
First thing I did was put a new QR on it, As I thought it was seized, turns out it was ok & just under pressure.
My test yesterday was to tip the dump trailer sligtly which it did but wouldn't let the oil back even in float, pulled the pipe & put it in the other port, trailer still didn't drop till I put a bit of oil out of the fitting, if you follow me.

I'm far from being an expert on these things but there is a small filter on every slice somewhere in the pipework. It's worth checking because there may be some backpressure that may cause some pilot valve or something to stick. I'll tell you straight that this is pure guesswork.
Do let us know what you eventually find to be wrong.

This would be a possibility on electrical
Spools that employ a pilot pressure to govern the spools to command the high pressure .
Mechanical
Spools do not employ pilot pressure as they are fully mechanical relying on the Bowden cable to govern the high pressure .

There’s a check valve in the “positive/lift” side of the spool block, but not in the negative/lower side of the spool. Had this on a Massey.

ours lost float position so removed the grey cover at the top and without realising turned the rod which runs through the spool, this unfortunately either breaks the rod or just unseats the rod which opens the check valve, which is why it’s holding pressure.

In the end I just removed the quick release coupling casting at the bottom and pulled the check valve out with a set of long nose pliers (not an easy task), I have got the parts to put it all back in, but it’s a spool block split job so parts are still in the cab ?.

That would be my guess.

These pictures are from a New Holland TM workshop manual, hopefully it helps to show the check valve location. Took a while for me to figure out what had happened.. Number 5 in first picture I think will be your problem.

I've had this with our masseys. It was the fittings on the trailer it didn't like the pip in the middle was slightly worn.try a new fitting or a little bit of weld on it .

That sounds like it could be the problem, No:1 spool has had a new cable fitted in the past so maybe as you suggest.

Only other thing I noticed today that No:2 spool very slow to drop the mower in float, had it in the high side of the spool so stopped engine & waited for maybe 30 secs, mower still dropped when lever put to float, which suggests no check valve fitted maybe? or am I wrong thinking that?

Not that, first thing I did with the roller on last week put 2 new nipples on & made no difference, worked on the other spools fine.

So...had a look this evening.

Pipes off
141.jpg

can see the check valves? in slices 1 & 2,
After another bit of a play slice 2 is dropping very slow in float, my thinking is wear in the check valves maybe, 1 & 2 being used most, 3 & 4 are working fine.

3 & 4, no check valve in slice 4 which is working perfect.

Did you manage to get it sorted?

The Claas spoils are in a better position to be able to access to try and repair the check valve. The Massey’s are fitted with the cables coming in at the back of the spool rather than the bottom, that puts the check valve where you’re cables are, I fished mine out using a mirror but definitely wouldn’t be able to refit without removing the splice.

Massey definitely sell the check valve kit if you want to try and repair it, Claas probably do too. If you wanted to repair I can send a pic of the New Holland workshop manual which shows where the rod running through the spool needs to be located for the check valve to work correctly.

Failing that, whip it out and see if it works?Think there’s a little spring, ball and a few other bits behind that cap you’re seeing.

Many moons ago i went to see a class that had the brakes done, one of the spools was not working blamed on sh!t fro brakes i it,

i would imagine general shite could get in them and block the return as barr11 has detailed, well worth removing to see if it works.

Yeah got it sorted yesterday, tried to do it in situ, but pulled the slices apart in the end.

pulled them out of 1 & 2, left 3 alone

Haven't got around to testing it yet as have a leaking injector out at the moment.

All seems clean enough but will be getting the oil changed soonish anyway.
