Claas/Renault Ares 656rz

Hello.
I have a Claas 656 in which today the engine just stopped dead and won't restart.
Does anyone know if sensor failure can cause this or does it just go into limp mode?
It's probably the ecu or pump but I just wonder how you can find which one as guessing can get very expensive.
It did this a while ago and I went through all the electrics and the sensors seemed to give the right voltage or resistance and I was loosing hope then it just started but ran rough then cleared and was OK for a while.
I am too old for all the excitement anyone suggest how to narrow this down. The connectors from the cab to the engine are good at the A pillar.

If it's got the John Deere engine with a d10 injection pump and black module under it chech the following:

Plug to the ECU
Pins on plug in the centre of the ECU
Should get about 3/4 volts at them when cranking

If you are and getting no fuel out of pump injection pump will have failed

I have an 826RZ which had exactly the same problem (except it would restart after just cutting out dead in the middle of work), and after a lot of investigative work and having the ECU re-mapped (several times!) and going through the fuel system with a fine toothcomb, all to no avail, I bit the bullet and sent the pump away and some sort of problem was found in it, possibly since new, and the tractor has been as sweet as a nut ever since it had the recon pump refitted. Wasn't cheap mind, £1500 springs to mind.

Have you been noticing any slight hunting of the engine under full load? That was what mine used to do, that and flash up a warning light on the dash.

After the first episode mine was twice low powered and struggling when cold but if you nursed it for 5 mins it came back fine but did flash brake fluid warning light!!. Then it was fine until today.

Can you check the ecu output from the pump leads or is the pulse too weak?

We had ECU problems on both our Renault 696 and Class 696 tractors at different times we identified the problem by swapping the ECUs around. We had the ECUs repaired by David King. However when the ECUs went the tractors would start and run but would go into limp mode.

Yes just take plug off back of the pump put multi meter in the 2 pins should get 3 to 4 volts it pwm so never reads much as long as it's got something there should try to start the pins in the plug normally need tighten up they get loose over time

Hello! I had the same problem with an identical Claas Ares 656 and after many investigations (diagnosis, ecu check and injection pump, checking that crown shape sensor on crank shaft with an endoscopical camera) i foumd that on of the whire that came from the cabine to the engine was snapped because of the bouncing of the cabin suspension.

Thanks for the replies. After much testing and hair pulling it was a faulty joint on the pump solenoid wire which we found by accident! It had tested OK for continuity but in the fixed position was open. Could find no visual fault with it or the wire, no corrosion and sound crimp! Anyway trimmed the wires and fitted new connector and off its gone.
Fingers crossed.
