Claas starting problem

We have a little 85hp orchard tractor we use for scraping out, pumping slurry, logs etc. It has never been a very good sarter on a cold morning, never seems to turn the engine fast enough, if we clip our jump starter onto the battery positive and pto shaft as the negative it starts instantly however cold it is. The battery is behind the seat in a small box so we cannot upgrade the size. Our local autoelectrician upgraded it to the most powerful he could for that physical size but it’s made no difference. Any suggestions? TIA.

Firstly stop connecting your jump lead earth to the PTO shaft😆🤦‍♂️

You'll soon be wanting new bearings on the PTO🙄

If you've done the battery and leads it only leaves the starter motor unless it has a discharge on battery over night which one would assume your electric man would have noticed?

If you give some details of the tractor model and engine type I can see what starter motor options there are.

Its been this way for many years and a couple of batteries so cant think is battery related.
If its the starter motor how comes my jumper battery pack starts it first time?

Its a 247f, 2009, iveco new holland engine.
Ill get you some more details tomorrow👍

If its the NEF iveco engine they are hard to spin over anyway and have a Bosch starter which is poor. Well known for slow cranking.
There's a far better Iskra/mahle starter to fit them.

The reason it starts with a boost is the slight increase in volts to the starter and extra amps. i get this problem all the time on telehandlers especially when people have fitted cheap copy lucas starters.

I can only find a cross ref for a 240F which is a Iveco NEF 4.5L oddly the cross ref is to a different part number than i normally use on the NEF engine but the specs/fitment look the same to me?

There will be a part number on a sticker of your old starter, might be a claas number or the bosch number which will help confirm.

Here is the battery. Starter, and earth strap behind the back wheel. Cheers

If Mursal was here he’d say to put a voltage meter between the battery earth post (the battery post and not the clamp or lead) and the case of the starter. When you crank it the meter will show you the voltage difference between the starter earth and battery earth, there shouldn’t be any reading much. It gives a good idea if you have a bad connection UNDER LOAD. You can do the same with the positive.

First simple check would be to crank the engine for a good ten seconds then check both battery connections, earth connection and connection on starter. Any heat in either points to resistance caused by a poor connection or wire breakdown and needs addressing. Another trick would be a jumplead from battery negative to a starter mounting bolt incase the starter is not earthing properly through the chassis.

If you need a new starter don't buy a cheapo copy, a new Bosch is nearly £400 which seems a lot. I've bought a starter for my terrible starting IH 475 from @ACEngineering, a Mahle/Iskra type and now she starts straight away. Google A&R Handling.

Replaced loads of these bosch ones, there almost as bad as the Lucas copies although the bosch do normally work when new unlike the Lucas ones😂

Do make sure connections etc on all leads are okay but I'm confident going on what you have said so far that starter is the cause of your problems.

I'm away from laptop at minute but will check that number out tonight.
