Classic tractor

Easy, apart from that hideous cab on it, its comfortable, has a good steering lock and a nice smooth and positive gear selection which doesnt require the driver to wrestle with a pair of 3ft long sticks connected by rubber bands to the gearbox

Oh, and it sounds nice as well

What.

Ford 78, MF 3080 and JD 3350

Ford was shod on rediculous wheels iirc...13.6/38 and 12.4/24s with a 4ft weight tray stuck out the front,

IH had a huge holset turbo stuck on it....

fair test as always :D
Again i suppose it's a matter of what's available. The 7810 would have pulled a lot better if shod on 16.9 rears and matching fronts.
If it had a turbo like the 1056 it would have gone like a rocket. Ours did, but then i'm a Ford man and will always defend the 78 to the hilt;) It's only real achilles heel was a lack of weight. To get the turbo modded one like ours to put the power down it really needed a ton on the front and another 1/2 ton on each rear wheel. In honesty a TW15 would be a better bet in heavy draft circumstances and is what we really should have bought. However the old 78 did very well and never gave much trouble especially considering it was asked to do a bit too much at times even when it was 9/10th worn out.

Anyway i digress. I'm sure the 3350 isn't a bad tractor but isn't my thing, and i still hear horror stories about repair cost at times. The 1056 was better than the '9' as it was faster on the road but still lacked a splitter.

As for the massey well they weren't perfect and had there issues but were a revolutionary step forewords. And was a new design whereas all the others were just updates that went back to the 60s.

It's all irrelevant now anyway as even my old TM135 can make any of the above seems hopelessly outclassed even though it's only really 25hp more.

I bet it isn't easy to find truly comparable tractors without them being at opposite ends of the country.

Drillman, you are dead right....in fact, it's very hard to find 20-30 year old machines with identical spec, the same level of tyre wear, the same hours, the same previous history, etc so it's a case of finding what you can and doing the best you can. R Day

John, of course, you have a lot of experience at trying to gather together four 20-year old same-size tractors from the same era in the same field...maybe you'd like to have a go sometime?

See earlier post where i did say how hard it is to find unmolested examples of each brand that are actually fit enough to do a days work.............

Its a fun, interesting magazine that makes a nice change from the doom and gloom of the yellow peril. I dont think its meant to be taken seriously. (Tin hat on id rather have the 1594 than the 7810)
