We had a bit of fun today, taking our three Ford/NH's to Turney's tractor clinic near Chipping Norton.

First on the dyno was our "K" reg 7740 with just under 10,000 hours on the clock
IMG_0184.JPG

As she spat out 104.5 hp from her PTO when it should have been a 86 hp!
IMG_0185.JPG

The pump has not been "doctored" and this gives an engine hp of about 120 when it should be 95!

Then we tried the N reg 8340 with 7000 hours on the clock
IMG_0186.JPG

And she spat out 120.6 hp at the shaft, being about 140 horses on the engine, when it should have been 125!

Lastly, we put our 2010 7050 with about 3,500 hours on the clock, on the dyno
IMG_0190.JPG

Here are the figures of her with the PTO boost turned off
IMG_0191.JPG

190.5 PS on the PTO, gives the engine at about 220 PS when she should be 195 PS.

Then we turned the PTO boost back on and saw this:
IMG_0193.JPG

227.8 PS on the PTO (when it should have been 212 PS on the engine), giving an engine PS of way over 240!

1 PS is about 0.99 hp, so near enough the same thing.

Turney's said they tried several makes of tractor last week. Notably nearly all the Ford/NH tractors had better than the book said hp and torque figures should be. But a JCB Fastrac 4200 series (we think with a Sisu engine) didn't quite get to what it should and dropped away like as stone as the revs dropped. As with John Deeres, none of which had the hp up to where they should have been!

I would respectfully suggest that perhaps the dyno is incorrect, or rather the program reading the dyno's output may be set incorrectly.

While I'm not knocking your tractors in any way at all, for them to producing such figures, well above the original manufacturer's quoted figures, is dubious IMO.

As I said, not having a go, and I certainly don't want to get into an argument about such things... :)

Maybe, I don't know. But I will say that I have always found Turneys trustworthy (even if they are "never knowingly Over-sold!").

I have heard on many occasions that nearly all Ford/NH tractors exceed there book specification re hp.
I would tend to agree after today.

But what absolutely stunned me was that dear little 7740 with 10,000 hours on the clock, shoving out all those horses at her age!

If it had shown 75 at the pto, I would have been pleased. But I've often thought that she has a lot of guts when I've used her on a power harrow. Her turbo starts to sing and she will not give up! And feck knows what she uses as fuel too.

I have had the tractor nearly 10 years , bought it unseen from Cornish Tractors from an ad i saw in Farmers Trader. It is believed to be an import from Holland . The tractor is from 1972 . Not really sure how many hrs she, done clock shows approx 6400 .The rev counter works but doesnt clock the hours.

Does that mean the other makes were not even close to spec, or are you suggesting they tweak the calibration for each make?

Many years ago I took my TM155 to our JD dealers dyno day as it was 1/2 mile down the lane from the farm....she was kicking out 168hp at the shaft with no tampering.

I think most 40 series and TM’s were kicking out more than quoted hp in a standard form, and when owners started “tweaking” them

I was leant a TM150 from the dealer once which was a dynoed 240 hp engine hp ( and a very whiny diff ) and I inherited a chipped T7.260 which equated to 320 engine hp... madness !!
