And low is too slow.
Oh and did I mention the gap between 2nd and 3rd.
I'll get my coat then.

Fords never did do anything to their poxy gearbox to eliminate that yawning gap between 2nd and 3rd in both low and high ratios.

Only when DP came in on the 7000 in about 1970 was the fundamental flaw sorted out to some extent: though it was never addressed on the smaller models, which forever had that lousy eight speed box with no gear between sixth and seventh for fast field work.

That was because back then Ford didn't want you to travel any faster than 2nd high when doing field work as either the tractors would start falling apart or due to those blue plastic seats, the uncomfortable injuries suffered by drivers wearing those godawfull nylon Y fronts that you allways got at Christmas would be doing their best to transform into G strings

Dual power was 1974, a farm next door had a demo 5000 with it on to test. For such a rubbish gearbox it sold well in many guises.

Yeah, yes okay I know it sold well, and we all know that a million lemmings can’t all be wrong.

I admit that Fords weren’t all bad but I had to drive the gutless damn things for too many years and I yearned for a gutsy Massey with a more normal gearbox of either six or twelve speeds.

We had both at the time, a 168 and a 6600, changing up and down the gears on the road was much easier on the Ford, dropping the multipower to low also didnt help you much!
