Cleaning out pot ale tank.

We have a pedders tank we fill with pot ale. It holds a artic load so it's a fair size. Can't remember cubic capacity. It's a rectangular shape.

We would have had it ten years and its getting bunged up at bottom. Has a 4" outlet. Has a small lid on top. Not big enough for a adult to get in. Could put one of kids in! Have a drain jetter nozzle, for pressure washer have tried putting it in outlet.

Anyone else had this problem and what was solution?

Drain jetter attachment, turbo end on a pressure washer, and a volume washer plus plenty of time and plenty of hassle!

Went through it on a much smaller scale with a diesel tank. Turbo lance on the pressure washer through the top and bottom and washed it out. Then painted it, filled it with diesel and discovered some pin holes in it :)

A wire or draining rod.
The thought of a good blackening....

Not a good idea to get inside anyway. Confined spaces regulations and all that bearing in mind that you are dealing with a by product of fermentation, so risk of residual CO2.

Put a proper hatch and a ladder. We clean ours every load. Power washer is ideal but a decent hosepipe and nozzle works too.

To do it properly you should be wearing a harness and have a tripod so that your body can be winched out. Plus ventilation and gas meters. Dad hasn't died yet though.

whatever you do, DO NOT GET IN or allow anyone in, it could well be full of CO2 and they would die in a couple of minutes. Not worth the risk , there have been several cases where people have accessed tanks like this and some gets in trouble then someone else gets in to help etc. 3 died up the road from here in one incident.
