My next door neighbour was having a whine last week about £31,000 in benefits was not to live on. He has 3 kids that i know about, eldest one is austistic, gets collected at 7.45am in the morning and dropped back off at 4.30pm by taxi at special needs school. His x-wife dumps his other kids off to look after 2-3 days per week. He is having to pay her alimony from what he has said to me. He has a nice shiny new Ford Puma sitting outside courtesy of motability.

But yes he was complaining about £31,000 not being enough to live on to me. I didn't ask for paperwork to prove that benefits figure, that that would have been a bit cheeky.

Just thinking of many folks in crappy jobs who only earn a fraction of £31,000, and have to pay tax, NI and may be a pension to.

I don't believe he gets that much.

That’s easy there are so many other things to do other than work these days. I was listening to a comedian talk about Sundays in the seventies and eighties and how little there was to do and how Songs of Praise was an exciting part of the day now there’s so much to do work gets in the way. Unemployment is around 5% but according to the ONS only 75% of the working population is actually in work.
I've often wondered what you have to do to be in the unemployed numbers.
I don't collect any benefit but don't currently have a paying job as I'm a stay at home dad and my wife works full time. We swapped roles when our oldest was 5 as my wife wanted to go back fulltime.
I could have a fulltime job too, do a 100 hours a week for a contactor, pay a heap of child care and rush the kids around to different child minders all the time (no other family locally) but don't need to, as we both worked our arses off before the kids came along, paid of the mortgage etc.
Now I do bits here and there to fit in with school hours and have time to take the kids to their sports and all the other things they like to do.
I even picked apples at the local orchard this year as they were really short of labour which meant they let me do school hours.
When the kids are a bit older we'll probably both work full time again or my wife can retire early and we'll easily live off my wage.
Does that make me lazy? Maybe but there's more to life than work and we don't owe anyone a thing (y)

So am I classed as unemployed or not working?

I also know a lot of blokes who either didn't get married or got divorced and the kids grew up. They live by themselves and are debt free, increasingly I see them opting to work fewer hours, part time or in job share roles because they don't need to do more.
I reckon its a smart move, enjoy life a bit.

They always say the polish are hard workers , so what’s different in Poland that makes them want to work hard and us not ? Surely our government need to work this out and apply it here !
When the Polish first came over they were hard working, some of it was work ethic but a lot of it was just how much more they could earn here compared to Poland.
After a while it wore off and they adopted all the traits a "typical" lazy Brit would show. Late for work, sick days especially after a weekend, only want to work inside not out in the fields etc. They integrated especially well. :D
Don't get me wrong, there are still plenty Polish that work hard but there are plenty Brits that do too.

As you aren't actively seeking work or claiming benefits then you aren't unemployed. It begs the question why work ? Plenty of farmers on here spend all their time complaining about prices etc when they could cash in their assets and live on the cash left over. I like what I am doing but there are millions in the world who don't so if they can get money in other ways they aren't going to be picking broccoli or driving lorries in a hurry.

I know a fella who employed 100 polish workers he said exactly the same as you ! Great at first ….. he’s happy to have British back now equally as lazy but no language barrier .

Perhaps the question that should be asked first is why is their a large and seems to be growing % of unemployable ? What’s gone wrong ?
They are breeding faster , nothing else do will their time ...welfare state will pay for everything ..A result of poor life choices not being punished ....

Locally one family have lots of kids as teenagers but then get too fat to reproduce by mid 20's, life time on the dole, help with cleaning the house, diet of coke & chips, free people carrier, lots of attention from NHS followed by death late 40's to mid 50's

This extended family even have their own council estate.
