Closing a dyke.

We have a small dyke between 2 small fields that I’m thinking of piping and filling in. It has a small spring feeding it and 1 inlet from a drain. Do I need any permission or have to notify any authorities.

I know I guy who piped 20 yards and a dog walker complained. Long story short they looked on Google earth to prove he had piped it and they made him dig it back out. So jfdi but don't get caught [emoji6]

Thought the thread would get more view if I used the word dyke rather than ditch.

Who made him dig it back out, and why? Ordinarily, I’m inclined to think it’s no body else’s business, but there are many possible issues to consider.

It’s actually not that hard to get approval to fill in a ditch. It is an application to the county council flood and water management team. Very easy form to fill out and a few FOC site visits, if you add flourished margins elsewhere or plant new hedges or woodland corners etc they will think it is a positive move.

Since when did you need permission? We piped a ditch years ago, we contacted the Council first who's response was " do what you want. its your ditch, our only comment is to advise you specify the correct pipe size". When we asked for their specification, they suggested 6", we installed a 10" pipe. Soon after the local road flooded, so we called them, they visited and asked if we'd piped their road drain in, we said " what road drain" . They came and dug up where the road drain was piped into the ditch, and repaired it (at their cost).
