While it’s still small and we can work in the rows between the crop wondering about some trials of clover Which type ?
will it release N all year or do we need to periodically mow it ?
How will it cope when there’s no much daylight on it when the willow gets back up ?
Hoping to drop some legs out of the dts and inter row sow a bit

A small-leaved clover such as AberAce which is used successfully as a companion crop to OSR would be worth a try. It will release N from summer onwards and you will probably need to mow it (someone may suggest a ride on j/k).

Clovers are used in solar parks where they are shaded and still work well. A small trial will give you the answers.

Why do you want N for willow?

Clover will die out in shade , and it does best in full sun.

And no it doesn't need cutting , and use small leaved WC like wild white, see the clue is I the name....its not native on heavy wet poorly drained ground tho.

The only ground cover ime that will cope with heavy shade are creeping grasses like fescue or bent if it's really wet ground. They would have the advantage of a ' raft' to take a bit of traffic while protecting soil.

if base uk is about CA then max. knowledge of clover should be a given to put iv bluntly imo.
Or perhaps its just another snobby arable farmers organisation....
