Questions in the title! Anyone with any tips and tricks throw it out there!

Bought a dozen cheviots a month ago now for a little experiment and 1 went lame last week, got her caught and bang! CODD. Week later and now 4 lame (not caught them to see what it is yet, could be scald being warm and wet here)

But best treatments? Am I getting rid of it or is it here to stay? Thanks!

Zactran works well for any foot problems we encountered, 2 ml under the skin, mark the ewe and if it repeats the problem then cull.
It seems expensive but after throwing alamycin and footbath solutions, I think for the speed of recovery it’s not to bad a price
I’ve found it best to treat with Zactran straight away, if that does Fix it then cull. Lot faster than spending weeks treating and treating for it still not to respond to Zactran in the end and meanwhile spreading CODD all over the place.

We had a run of bought in ewes that all went off their feet, I kept them inside, footbath with zinc twice a week and alamycin la
Vet called in for a tb test on some calf’s we had bought, so I asked him what’s best.
Alamycin should do it he said but the footbath is a wast of time once there’s a problem, we ended up jabbing 5 ewes with zactran and the other’s with alamycin, as he left he said give me a ring Wednesday ( it was Friday) and let me know if they are any better
Monday I was on the phone ordering a bottle of zactran!
Never trimmed or footbath since

Hardly trim at all now. The vets ran a trial here when they started on the No trimming ideas. I got 20 hours of vet time and my flock foot heath addressed all for free! Convinced me enough. I still use the CZF footbath a lot with scald or just in case measures.

cull even if they come right? lot of money lost to buy the ewes put expensive antibiotics in and then cull them. Not worth running them on? Suppose there’s still the risk of spreading to the entire flock if they go in together
I give ours a second chance if they come right, spot of blue marker spray on the head after the jab , any limping with a blue mark are then culled and their lambs never kept .
As you say it can be both hellish expensive to jab and cull ( also heart breaking)

Was going to be a BFL going on then for replacements but this might have knocked that on the head and put a Suffolk in and get rid of the lot :scratchhead: like you said almost heartbreaking when you’re trying to grow every bit you can

Get them right and see if they stay right , plenty of time till tupping , as an aside the ground around our house seems to be bad for foot problems, I was chatting to the old chap we got this part of the farm from and he said “ you must footvax and footbath “
I’ve destocked this part then re introduced our own ewes some months later , so far so good with no foot problems
