Do you not have a library at your college?
It might be a good place to start. The work you do in researching things for yourself will make them more memorable to you and help you to develop a better understanding.
Sorry if it sounds cruel and a bit hard but you will gain more by doing the hard work yourself.

yes but the problem isnt the finding of the information its the understanding and knowing what needs to be included and what is relevant in stead of just copying and pasting and hoping for the best

Shouldn't be copying and pasting anyway! Read around it and come up with your own version. It's only if you start to put it together yourself you'll understand it. I'm sure you will have a more positive reaction if you have a bash at it yourself and then ask for some feedback rather than wanting to be spoon fed from the start. Is there a reason you feel you need support?

The chap is asking for help not asking for us to do the work for him. The assignment brief is particularly vague and does not explain what level of detail is required nor does it state a word count.

I suggest you make a poster consusting of 3 sheets of A3, set them landscape and lay them out as 3 columns of text and pictures. Can you print on A3 at college woth their hardware or use a high street photography place??

It will be 2000 words at least and need about a dozen references I would think.

What level course is this you are undertaking??

I can email you an example layout or template but it will be devoid of any content.

I hate assignments that are vague like this.

I am in the process of trying to get diagnosis for adhd or something linked to difficulty to concentrate and quick to flare up if something goes wrong like throughout school it was sh!t to put it best told I was lazy and a bad kid but when I moved schools my grades went from being all u to yes its not impressive getting 1 c but it was maths a subject I was told I have no hope in the rest were d and e

So what aspects do you want help with? As the 'technical spec' is left open then that is open to your own interpretation as to what you regard as a poster. The more important aspect is what you include in it. Read around the required animal production systems and make a judgement as to what the different systems are.

I have emailed you a word document you can use as a template. It is from an assignment I completed recently. The title, subtitles and diagrams may remain unchanged or be totally irrelevant for you but you can easily change them and they show how to fit the required diagrams into the text. The text is complete gobbledegook placeholder text so just overwrite it as you go. It is in the font size 11 and about 1800 words on 3 sides of A3 laid out in landscape.

The referencing system I have used is specific to the University of the West of England (UWE): I have left them in to show you how to do it but check how your college wants them laid out. The layout of the referencing style in the very last section tends to vary according to what the college or establishment want.

Any diagrams or photos or illustrations you put into the text via cut and paste normally have to be referenced unless they are your own, I have left the referencing part under each diagram in point size 9.

One last thing: forget your GCSEs- they are done now. Promise yourself (and us) to stop talking about your failures or making excuses- everyone has had a failure somewhere and they don't matter. Forget those and concentrate on showing people what you can do, that is how you impress people and feel proud about your own achievements.I had a sh!t time at school as well and I didn't do as well as I could have: I couldn't even do the A levels I wanted to do as they just were not offered a my school. However, that has not really stopped me since and they are now so long ago that I have had a chance to make up for them anyway. I know people who have retrained many many years after they left school or people who left school with absolutely no qualifications who have enjoyed huge success in their careers. Determination is the key requirement for success. Don't sell yourself short.

Best of luck. If you need any more help or a proof read once you are done let me know.

Ah, someone with the same initial thought as me! The question is vague and demands explanation. Ask your course tutor.

Sorry @power 02, this reply has turned into a piece of coursework all on it's own :(

I agree that the question appears vague but maybe this is intentional? Maybe the demands of the course are partly about providing the students with some freedom and the opportunity to construct their own interpretation? Sounds like bull I know but a tight brief can really push you up a corner if you're not used to working within those sort of limits?

yes but the problem isnt the finding of the information its the understanding and knowing what needs to be included and what is relevant in stead of just copying and pasting and hoping for the best

I'd read your brief as suggesting a poster for people who don't have any understanding of farming, so I'd start with basic facts for each and build from there until you're comfortable with the level of detail you've included.

So; are you required to reference correctly in your current year? If not don't get too hung up on it because as Ollie says above there are many different ways to reference, often very tightly specified too and it's a massive ball ache if you aren't familiar with it. Having said that it'd still be very good practice to list your information sources in some way so that your lecturer can see you've not just relied on a single web page or book; it'll show you've made some effort.

If the requirements aren't as detailed as Ollie has suggested try to produce a single side of A4 for each species; personally I'd start by making some quick notes about each. I know very little about pig production systems so I'd start by googling "pig production systems, UK" and see what comes up. Remember the internet is mainly full of rubbish so be careful to choose what looks like a sensible place to start. AHDB appears near the top and their page has some helpful looking sub headings; indoor and outdoor systems seems to fit your brief so I'd head there. Only you know how much is expected of you at this stage but I'd visit each page and pick a couple of interesting sounding sentences from each and either type them out or write them down. Doing this as opposed to cut and paste will help you remember and understand the topic. Once you've got to a level of depth you think suitable I'd move on to the next animal - so maybe they only want "pigs can live indoors" and a picture of a pig indoors, maybe you're a long way beyond that and they want the level of detail and number of words Ollie has suggested above?

Once you've got your key facts for each species you can put them into a sensible order, so if you've written down that 60% of pigs live indoors in the UK you're going to want to mention that after you've mentioned that there are indoor and outdoor systems for example. @Mur Huwcun mentioned pictures above; they're a great way of explaining production systems so pick some that are relevant but make sure they're from the UK! The number of cows that pop up in magazines etc with non-UK ear tags is both amazing and really annoying so pick carefully.

Try to find more than one website for information if you're doing all your research online

Don't try to do it all in one day. Do your fact finding then walk away and do something enjoyable, come back to it later on.

Don't get too hung up on presentation; it's important but the brief really implies the content is king on this one.

Try to produce the same amount of information for each species, hence the limit of one side of A4 for each. A poster has to be readable so your font size will need to be bigger than 12 but not massive otherwise you'll not get anything on the page!

If in doubt make a start and then ask your tutor if you're doing what they want; show you're not making excuses and are prepared to work at it. As Ollie says it's time to forget school and whatever happened there, it's got you to where you are at the moment so it's served it's purpose and from now on only your time at college can help you on to whatever you want to do next.

Ignore Task 2 until you've done the basic fact finding for Task 1; you'll soon realise which of the species you're most interested in and the leaflets will be a lot easier as a result. Perhaps think about designing them as sales leaflets, so basic facts picked from Task 1 along with pictures and benefits of the product, maybe pictures of different size eggs with egg weights for small, medium and large eggs for example.

You've had good advice here OP but I would just add speaking as an ex-BTEC tutor that assignment brief is crap, so are there any clues in the teaching materials or prep stuff about key ideas to include? A good tutor will have told you without telling you (because BTEC is a lot harder these days, there's no doubt) if you see what I mean.

Don't worry too much about referencing correctly for a level 2 course but it is good practice to make a good attempt at it. You'll be marked on content not presentation as well so don't panic if you struggle to make things look ''pretty".

Could a forum be set up in Extras headed 'student support network' or suchlike ? Students like power 02 could post their probem/issue in there and bat it about with their peers, who will all be going through similar assignments around the UK ag colleges.
Of course the more seasoned members of tff could drop in and help as they have with this post, but peer support can often be less intimidating and easier to seek. Such a forum would be a useful contribution by tff to the next generation. Just a thought.
