Combatting roof moss problem

We sprayed our dwelling house roof with knapsack , think the product was called de - moss , French product , dear as poison, probably done about September time dry day , waited patiently for the moss to clear , thought it was a waste of time .the following spring / summer the roof was clean , really look smart , we were well pleased . That was about 12 years ago , roof is still good

I recently bought a tool from facebook for cleaning roofs, my local roof cleaner wanted £700 just to clean our roof so thought id do the job myself on my weekends off. took me two full days to finish but happy with the results i didnt apply any chemicals because i read they can cause cancers but ill just get up there and scrape it off if it grows back again. I got the tool from here https://roofscraper.co.uk/collections/roof-cleaning-equipment it was a little expensive but a lot cheaper than paying a roof cleaner and now i can do it myself.
Wow! That is a bit out of my budget. I only have a small house but was quoted a four figure price for painting the outside walls. Bought the paint, brushes, and a long extendable pole and did the job in a couple of days, so I am all for DIY. I doubt the lot cost me £100.

I have used the pole with an adapted half moor drain cleaner plate on the end. I just bolted a flat steel plate on the half moon to make a scraper. Worked fine but not long enough reach so I need to buy an extension. Single story house so not a big job.

Fed up with waiting for my chimney sweep to arrive so bought a set of nylon chimney sweeping rods and kit off Ebay for use with the electric drill which arrived yesterday. I used drain rods previously which separated in the flue. Panic! But I got them out with a home made screw on the end of the rods -- lesson learned. Fitting the nylon rods together was a bit fiddly but the fire is drawing fine now. So, £50 for a 'permanent' fix against £40 a time for the sweep when/if he can fit me in! It's a no brainer.

Old thread, but I'll add to it anyway.

Most of the spray on products like Wet and forget have the active ingredient quaternary ammonia, dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride or something like that. That is the new antibacterial agent that is in virtually any germ killer that is not alcohol or chlorine. Some quantity has been produced in the last couple years, and it is available everywhere, and cheap.

Quaternary ammonia will kill the moss, it will take some time for it to wash off. A thick coat of moss may not get coated well enough to kill it all, so another application six months later may be needed. It's not fast, that's why you forget it.

Copper or zinc will work even slower, they're not as good at removing moss, better to start with a clean roof. I don't know why the copper didn't work on that roof, rain may not be acidic enough? or the moss just has too nice a place to live there? the roof may have had a lot of moss before the copper was installed? Finer strands will have more surface area, those large strands will last a thousand years. Copper sulfate is very corrosive, it will rust out any steel flashing or nails it contacts. Zinc oxide is not corrosive to steel.
