First time I have sold OSR this side of christmas for year - good move or not ?

Depends on where the FX goes. That £338 will be inc bonus's I presume? So... £310-315ex as a base price.

Nearly £20/t of the downward move since end Aug has been due to currency strength, the futures market itself has done very little.

Not sure if that will happen but bodes well for next years contracts if they are not awash with the stuff this harvest.
Quality does seem to be suffering now. Heard of someone with 300t in the shed. First load scraped in on a germination retest yesterday and second one rejected today. Just going to keep sending them in as thinks if he can get them in at £165 he can afford to bring the rejected ones back again for sale as feed later on:(
Or try them again in the new year when the goal posts might have a bit of a post Christmas hangover ;)

Sold a load to one merchant and they have put it in their own store. They are taking the punt that it is going to be expensive next spring.
Normally it goes straight for crushing from our area this time of year.

Merchants don't speculate (so they say)

Who says that? They take a view on the market and take a position. Its unusual to buy OSR priced and put it in store, because you have to pay for it now, and only get paid when you come to move it in a few months time. Much cheaper to buy paper or ex farm for future months, no cash up front to finance.

Its not exactly speculation, its a managed risk.

The mills were held by the market last year and had to pay up until Aussie imports arrived in January, it looks to me like they've taken some early cover to avoid the same again.
