I think there’s a French adage that a crop only ever looks good once in its life. Certainly since I first heard it it several years ago it does always seem to be true so personally I’d rather mine looked good on the day I intended to harvest it if I could choose.
It looks at its best 28 days after it leaves the farm.

Lodging isn’t the issue. Shelling out is what I’ve found to be the main concern. With a good fungicide app at flagleaf/ear emergence then straw will be grass green and the heads are ripe. Makes a sticky mess inside the combine not allowed to desicate oats for human use so we swath them but they need to be past any green seeds or they can get down graded. Typically the side tillers are 10 days behind and that extra time is open to abuse by the wind.

Same issue here in Lincolnshire August 2020. Spring Oats just about fit and then an unseasonal day of gale force wind. Half the crop on the deck a few hours later.

Personally I don’t see any point in sitting on grain when markets are historically high, my bins will be empty unless something changes big time. This year was a perfect storm for prices worldwide and I for one am not going to sit and wait wishing I’d have sold when things were good.
Best thing that can happen to holders is for putin to have a go at the Ukraine, otherwise I fear 1 will precede next weeks prices

Better off with plenty of N, no pgr and let them go flat early then😂
Any crop that’s flat early will never yield or have any kind of reasonable test weight. I know of no one that uses pgr s. Between the cost and the heat during the growing season I’d be scared to. Our crop need to get on and grow, with a short season already any thing holding it back increases the weather risk.

That would be a bad thing if it happens. Makes me wonder wat will happen if Russia invades the Ukraine adding their massive food base to Russia’s control, only to be at odds with the yanks who are themselves in a pissing contest with China that Putin is sympathetic too. That’s a major pair of political supers holding a big chunk of the worlds consumable goods giving Biden the finger.

Suppose the question is whether USA says, ‘cobblers we are keeping out of it, let the neighbours in Europe sort it, if they wish’.

Biden has already stood up and stated it won’t be acceptable and action would be taken. Or words to that effect. If he store up a hornets nest I hope the prime minister here has a pair of gonads and tells him to go it alone. Canada relies on foreign trade and isn’t in a position to find new trade partners. The yanks rocking the Chinese boat and having Canada arrest the chick from the phone company threw the pig industry into a tail spin. Can’t see us standing shoulder to shoulder with Biden in a face off with Putin and his supporters doing trade any good. Think fertilizer is expensive now shoot a Russian and he’ll turn off the natural gas and watch the western world struggle.

He doesn't need to invade. Donbas is russian already. Next, no gas transit fees. Then some jiggery pokery at Odessa port. You could draw a line from Kharkiv, to Sevastopol via dnipropetrovsk and everything to the east is Russia.

Not so sure. Hes opened his mouth and will be hard to back down now. if putin goes ahead and invades Europe will have to be careful of their actions or it could be pretty cold with no gas. Going into Kazakhstan to help restore order was just a show of force. Bit of a look what I can do. playing mind games.

Indeed. As the old adage goes 'we live in interesting times'. But we in England do really need to focus on more important matters. Refocusing County Cricket to develop potential top order batsmen of test quality. Able to hold onto their wicket and with patience to build an innings.

@Blaithin Good morning. the USDA report says high amount of wheat than previous thought. How would you say things look from your part of the world.
Our wheat numbers are fairly set right now. Nothing is growing here….

Southern States you’ll have winter wheat right now which I’m assuming is primarily what the report mentioned would be discussing.

Canadian wheat was down 38.5% in 2021.

Even if that report from December is low, it’s not so low as to bring that 38.5 up to good levels.
