I'll not be overly concerned until Mariupol is governed by the Donetsk People's Republic. I'd be looking to control all the edge of the Sea of Azov if I were a russian tactician.

Mariupol is 50 percent russian by population.

You should think of this more of a reunification than a russian invasion.
I can tell you as someone who has spent time in Mariupol and elsewhere in East Ukraine, the only people who will see it as reunification will be the Russians

All the people other than some pensioners who fled the fighting in Luhansk and Donetsk fled west, the pensioners who stayed or went East did so because Russian pensions are slightly more generous than Ukraines.

Worked in crimea. Breakaway Republic, declares sovreinity, holds referendum, joins Russia, troops go in.
