Caught the tail end of an interview on Radio 5 live at lunch time, chap was talking about wheat price increase and how unprecedented it was. Then went on to say there will be food price inflation, not just in the UK but wider.

First time I have ever heard such a conversation in the main stream media.

media often use potato price increases in dry years as excuse for expensive fish and chips ……… despite the potato cost on a portion of fish and chips being pretty insignificant

Wheat got a mention Friday morning from Tom Tugendhat MP. Food price and non food price inflation is already underway Jerry - do you do the supermarket shop in your house? I do ours. Some of our regular 'staples' are up - for example Morrisons olive pack was £3 punnet for years, and is now £4. The items that do not seem to be rising are bloody pre pack potatoes - they are exactly where they were a year and two years ago - and actually M Piper are on promotion. Funny old game this category management by retailers. Hey ho.

GB News have been on about wheat price, food price inflation and high fert price for the last month at least on and off. Generally on the farmers side aswell, with plenty of people interviewed saying we need more food security!
Has it taken the fecking bbc that long to come out with it? Not the food security bit obviously because they dislike farmers intensly!

you would think the Ukraine is well factored in to old crop prices now ? i can see it trading 230-260 may kind of range but higher will need worse news

i think new crop is too low though at 220 nov level’s and am considering extending my nov22 position

physical markets could get interesting though if buyers are not covered, imports dry up and farm stocks are gone - throw in a delayed or late harvest and it really would go to the moon !
Unless there is a miracle Ukraine is entering a very unstable period with
Putin now being indiscriminate with his attacks on residential areas .
This war could go on for months if not years so if you were a large agricultural
business how much risk would you place on cropping the ground ?
Yes that probably suits Nov pricing more but I think old crop prices might
be dragged upwards before the next harvest once the physical ,forward bought
grain dries up .Dont forget today's prices are only a few pounds ahead of 3months
ago before all this trouble kicked off .

How long till they announce dig for victory?

I know farmers need high prices to pay for inputs.

But when food prices go higher & people are struggling with lots of other bills, it is likely that a cheap tabloid style tv programme is made about farmers profiteering.

A google search will bring them here.

Sorry, just a thought.

How will it be profiteering?

Fuel is up, fert has over doubled. How much is a 140hp tractor nowadays?

CHICAGO, Feb 28 (Reuters) - Chicago Board of Trade corn futures jumped by their daily limit on Monday, while wheat futures spiked after hitting 13-1/2-year highs on Friday on concerns that Russia's attack against Ukraine will continue to disrupt grain shipments from the Black Sea region.

Soy futures also rallied as the conflict limited vegetable oil exports.

Ukrainian ports will remain closed until Russia's invasion ends, the head of Ukraine's Maritime Administration said, adding that the port of Mariupol sustained damage from Russian shelling.

Fears about infrastructure damage also fueled doubts over planting of Ukraine's 2022 corn crop, grain traders said.

Russia invaded Ukraine on Feb. 24, calling its actions a "special operation." Russian forces encountered resistance from Ukrainian troops and civilians on a fifth day of conflict on Monday.

Russia and Ukraine account for about 29% of global wheat exports, 19% of world corn supplies and 80% of world sunflower oil exports.

Egypt's state grains buyer, which relies heavily on Black Sea wheat, on Monday canceled a second international tender for wheat following the invasion.

Later, Egypt's supply minister said the country is considering a gradual price increase for subsidized bread, without affecting the most vulnerable.

Egypt is expecting 180,000 tonnes of Ukrainian wheat before March 3 and another 180,000 tonnes in March, said Matt Zeller, analyst for broker StoneX.

"Both are in danger of force majeure," Zeller said.

Most-active CBOT wheat futures ended up 74-1/4 cents at $9.34 a bushel, after temporarily rising by an expanded 75-cent daily trading limit. On Friday, the contract touched its highest since summer 2008.

Most-active corn futures climbed the daily 35-cent limit to end at $6.90-3/4 a bushel.

Corn's trading limit will remain at 35 cents on Tuesday, and wheat's limit will revert to 50 cents, CBOT owner CME Group said.

Soybeans ended up 52-1/4 cents at $16.36-3/4 a bushel, after rising last week to the highest since September 2012.

Consultancy Strategie Grains said Russia's attack is expected to halt the processing and export of Ukrainian oilseed crops for at least a month.
