Combines

Whatever you get take a combine fitter with you to look before you buy, could save you thousands in the long run, for that money it would of had some work, but at the right place and looked after no problem, but the wrong place and not maintained and it's an nightmare waiting to happen, we cut 270 acres with a new Holland cx it's well over capacity and wasn't cheap but it's built to last and will be with us for years.
Done the same myself . Ended up with a cx to hopefully last a pile of years . 30k didn't seem to buy anything fresh enough to consider imo and a few bills could see the machine not being worth the repairs. They are already 20 years old in that price range.

I wanted a decent size to gear myself to be able to harvest and cart myself . Also on coast so short days , with malting barley which at right moisture can hopefully go straight on a wagon. 5 walkers was the choice but ended up with a 6 as it seemed the better buy . Dunno if it was width or what but was cheaper than a 2 year older 5 walker of similar spec otherwise.

Never had a NH as was always been a Deere man but just don't rate newer Deeres other than for dealer back up being spot on . Give me a 2258.... and but nothing newer . Had decided it was NH or claas .

Recently found a late well pampered 2256 which I hope will give me 6 or 8 yrs of service . That was £mid30s, and has some if not massive capacity, but about the biggest width machine we can fit. I fear the op will need to up his budget for a half decent machine.

Similar story to us, we had always run massey's but they lost way too much money very quickly and the newer models didn't seem very reliable so it was claas or nh for us, we were lucky one came up at a fairly local sale it had been very well looked after and was ideal, yes it's too big for us but our drier can't handle lots of wet corn so we put the money in the combine and go when the crops are fit.

Well so far the likely candidates seem to be Massey cerea, JD2264/66 NH TX66 and NH TF78

We have seen a few Claas ones in budget as well but not many.

Thoughts on the above please.

And also what is considered to be a lot of hours for a combine?

Thanks

Can't tell you about the jd, but the new Hollands are built way better than the fergie, our new Holland is a six walker as opposed to the 5 walker fergie it replaced but it's 4 ton heavier, noticeable difference in quality of build and parts, our old fergie had done 2400 drum hours and metalwork was wearing through all over the machine, new Holland currently on 1900 drum hours hardly any wear, that's why we switched to yellow, and the fergies lose money quicker than they can print it!
