Thing is, sometimes some thing happens to make you look at what you are doing and that can be an opportunity.Certainly trailing the roads is a young man job but hasn’t that young man earned the right to some level of security so he doesn’t have to do it all his life?
I used to run sheep on multiple short term let's and it was a struggle. Nightmare landlords, crap fencing, flood planes or taking on ground and having it sold under your feet. In the end I asked myself if I could see myself doing it in ten years time. Sold sheep as couples luckily in a good year and had a change in direction. Honestly it was a relief. Hadn't realised how stressful it was and how knackered I was. And I wasn't looking after someone else's stock at the same time! Respect to you.
I got completely fed up with some crap, bad fenced and flooding ground that they put into schemes 5 years ago, I told them that they had to buy the sheep and I would shepherd them and charge them for electric fencing every field that the sheep go into. I do much better out of the job now and don't have an extra £40k worth of sheep that potently might drift down stream to London! That's the worst of a lot of it. These days owner don't put a penny into the land/maintenance... they expect ground thats been neglected for 20 years to perform exactly as it did before they let it rot - and they think fences full of holes bit still standing are fine
That’s the crux of it but when there are 20 farmers wanting to rent the land, why would they bother ? Unless they are stand up guys who look past the next rent cheque. There are both types and I have farmed land for both types. Once give up a small farm with a great land lord who I got on very well with for a much larger unit where the land lord promised the earth but did nought and turned out to be a proper greedy bas*ard. You live and learn. That's the worst of a lot of it.
