Commuting to work carbon footprint

What about dishwashers , what would be saved by washing dishes by hand
Dishwashers used correctly are pretty efficient because the bulk of the energy usage is from heating up the water - something that happens if you hand-wash anyway & used correctly a modern dishwasher will use less water overall compared to handwashing. Their downfall is people running them when the machine isn't full or pre rinsing under a running tap.

One of the worst culprits are washing machines - especially those with integrated drying cycles because nobody seems to want to hang washing out on a line these days.

Nobody used to commute
They lived at the job
Accountants and lawyers all lived in cities, now they live in farmhouses
Indeed, when I was a kid, the people who lived in rural properties were at the lower end of the pay scale and were almost certainly what would be classed as locals with their family history known to other locals going back generations and were part of the rural community.

We have a society and economy based on capitalism and individual freedoms to do whatever we wish within certain laws.
Any government serious about tackling climate change would need to take some very unpopular decisions which would curb peoples freedoms as we now know them. For example limit flying, car travel or commuting amongst other things. An election manifesto which includes any of these is a sure fire loser so won't happen.

If policy was based with the climate impact considered first then I have no doubt the problem would be solved quickly. This will not happen and, unless technology can provide solutions, I doubt that there will be a solution to the climate crisis.

Years ago if you built a mill you had to build housing nearby for the workers as well or there wouldn't be any workers.
Farmers are much less polluting than most other folk as most of them walk to work
