charge over night 348 mile range - how many days do you need t9 do more than that ? Recharge while wasting your lunch each day ?

electric is getting practical these days

hybrid is pointless, they end up doing less average mpg than their diesel equ quite often and there are nonor of the tax breaks that exist for full ev’s

348 while new in ideal conditions? is that the same on a very cold snowy day with all the heaters and lights on getting stuck in traffic?

I think I would go for a Mustang if I was spending that money on an electric car... looks the part and a little more range.

Thank you for some very interesting replies - I think everyone is having the same challenge!

FYI be careful with hybrids as they need to do over 130 miles on electric alone to qualify for the lowest band from April 2020 onwards which writes off a couple of hybrid options.

Tesla still to expensive and the charging etc.

Rapidly realising that there is no answer - so maybe just go for the least worst option!

Audi Allroad is what you need. My cousin is a vet and she's just taken delivery of her third one. She put 150,000 miles on the previous two (A4 versions) but has now gone to the A6 version. Other than servicing and tyres she has never had a single issue in 300,000 miles total!! Hopefully the new A6 version will be equally as reliable. She's up and own farm tracks all over the south west and as she says, they just work.

Cripes, what female farm vet in the South West is able to earn enough money to run an Allroad?!

Electric cars are miles off where they should be. Neighbour has a iPace and hates the thing. Another friend with a tesla does not like it due to battery.

Have a look at the carwow test:

Theres a video of it on you tube as well. None of them do the miles the manufacturer advertises.

even if you knock 50 miles off that it’s still 300 miles a day - I suggest it’s a rare thing many do more than that and recharge is quick with infrastructure not actually at all bad already

I love petrol and have a shed full of classic gas guzzlers but can’t get away from the fact that for daily use electric now makes a lot more sense. I have a EV family car coming in April and am looking forward to saving over £100 on diesel, £570/ year road tax and the BIK of a high co2 car

I know loads of very happy Tesla owners some of which are on their 3rd or 4th already

wouldn’t expect JLR to build anything decent these days, never mind an electric car !

Taycan looks an amazing bit of kit, most tests show it exceeding claimed range and it’s faster than pretty much any petrol car there is but carries x4 adults in comfort

What will a new today petrol or diesel family car be worth in day 5 years time ?

bugger all imo, electric will be default by then looking at how things have progressed in the last 5 years

I'd love an electric car, but the ranges are still a bit off. And range at - 30°C is even more off. And i sometimes need to drive 1000 miles+ a day. And tow trailer. Maybe in 10 years time there will be an electric car that can do those thing fairly well.

A high mileage EV may not be without severe depreciation penalties with battery costs and rapid obsolescence?
A good friend has a Tesla 3 performance with extended range. He spends a lot of time behind the wheel and has been, on the whole, very pleased with the deal and subsequent use. He travels some distance on occasion but with fast charge in services and some shops range has never been an issue. One hotel this week he topped up without charge.
He is employed but found the tax angle better providing his own car. He gets quite handsome mileage. He did the maths against his previous car, a hybrid Lexus, and decided the EV was a no brainer. The Lexus took a real hiding depreciation wise and was not amazingly economical. He has opted to lease the Tesla over 3 years and has costed under the purchase of the hybrid even taking in to account a one off deposit payment. He will hand the car back at the end of the contract. The main reason for leasing was to avoid aging batteries (guaranteed for 120k miles iirr) and technology moving on.
The Tesla 3 will not be to everyone's taste but it has super car performance at the price of top end mainstream. Although his model is 4wd, I doubt it will be very handy on a farm track as it is quite low.

First up fast charge accelerates the deterioration of li-ion batteries as does toppng up to the full amount or full discharge. Secondly, you might have noticed that the car companies have moved to advertising 'self charging hybrids', that is ICE powered cars with a fancy transmission and bigger than normal battery. One manufacturer (can't remember which) even goes so far as to boast of having no cable to plug in, in other words they know that the great British public want no truck with faffing about with bits of wire to keep moving. So your friend will have a plug in car that nobody wants along with a battery that will not be offering the range of a new car. Would you buy a used vehicle with a smaller fuel tank that shrinks each time you fill it up? Maybe, but I doubt that you'll want to pay much for it.

Precisely why he is leasing and handing back but having some fun for 3 years.

The new Foresters hybrid drivetrain is a joke. 16hp electric motor that cuts the emissions just 14g/km compared to the non-hybrid. I drove one, liked the interior etc. But the hybrid is there just to add weight. Only speeds it can do on full electricity are parking lot speeds.

It should be a phev and have atleast 50 electric horesepower.
Perfect for the M25! :p

Think a pickup is probably the best option at the moment.

not against electric by any measure - but don't think that BIK, tax, overnight electricity prices won't increase when most people have switched to EV - got to raise the revenue from somewhere.

Besides, is there even enough electricity produced?
