Concrete slabs traditional mesh or plastic / steel fibres

Fibre reinforced concrete has been around for a while. I'm interested to know who has one / some and how have they worked out ? If you have one, would you lay another ? Has the finish caused any problems and so on.

Any comments most welcome.

Structural fibres look expensive on the face of it ,but people tend to price it against a sheet of 6mm mesh that is only a anti crack and adds very little strength i always use the poly fibres if i think there is a chance of plastic surface cracking as well as a 8mm mesh

if you are only putting 1 layer of mesh in a floor it is only to prevent expansion cracking.

say the concrete floor happens to have a gap under the middle so it is acting like a bridge the bottom of the concrete will be in tension and the top compression, as concrete is very weak in tension the bottom will crack slowly working its way to the top.

if you had an 8" pad with steel in the middle it would be roughly as good as a 6" pad with the mesh 2" from the base (once it had cracked due to the bottom becoming in tension) also an 8" concrete with fibres on a proper stoned base is the spec for HGV yards so why certain farmers think they are clever putting thicker down its just wasted money, the base is the key if this moves even 8" will crack.

the only problem some fibres have is getting a good finish or rusting on the surface but poly fibres seem a lot better and have almost cured all problems. new fibres are roughly 10mm long or shorter? as appose to the really old ones at nearer 50 or 25 mm
